I wish I knew how I managed to get a bruise on the back of my hand. It's rather hurty, I assume because it's more bones than flesh there.

I had to get off the packed train I was on this morning. The announcement said it was going out of service, because it was "crippled". Not the first word I would think of.

Doors on one train had the message "Doors do not recycle." Which seemed an odd thing to say, since they obviously don't revolve, nor are they likely to be reused. I assume the intent was to tell people that the doors don't rebound (unlike most elevator doors), but I'm still a bit uncertain.

The Piazza San Marco is a trapezoid. Somehow, this pleases me. (Is it bad to have had a trapezoid-filled afternoon?)

Non-recycling doors

One of the most useless bits of info the T provides. Yes, after some searching (and not on the T's usually helpful website), I found out that it really means "these doors do not bounce; don't leave your hand, foot or head in there"

The first time I saw them, I assumed it was a snarky take on the T's environmental policy.

If "disabled" is a more polite way to say "crippled" then maybe the T is dissing their trains :)

That's what I finally decided it must mean, but really, how obfuscatory.

Funny how the conductor went straight from "out of service" to "crippled." Do not pass "disabled," do not collect $200. :-)

well, that's an awful lot of people to give $200 to.

True. Maybe a couple of free T passes instead?

$200 would be much more likely to get me on the T again ;)

Heh. I suspect $200 would be much more likely to get you to Pandemonium (or any other book shop) again. ;-)

I frequently end up with bruises on the backs of my hands (or on the sides or the wrists). I'm never sure where they come from. They're usually not like regular bruises in that they go to the yellow stage right away, without the purple/green/blue bits.

I felt this one coming on yesterday, but the bruise didn't show up until today. It's yellower, like yours. Weird.

Hrmmmm. I usually can't feel the yellowish bruises on my hands -- which is why I'm usually surprised when they show up.

I'm surprised by a lot of bruises; I don't remember incidents that might acquire bruises, apparently. Well, sometimes exceptional ones.

You know, I think I remember you hitting the back of your hand on the outside of my cubicle wall yesterday or the day before as you came to talk to me.

Huh. I wish I remembered.

You're dying, that's obviously it. The great HandBruise plague has found you at last.

I promise to leave nice flowers.

Not carnations, please. Maybe lilies or irises?

I have a petunia fetish. How do you feel about petunias?

Date: 2004-09-22 01:16 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] magid.livejournal.com
I'm reasonably neutral on petunias. No carnations, no mums (I was so sad to find out that the flowers I'd read about in Chinese fairy tales, chrysanthemums, were the same mums I didn't like. Crushing, I tell you.).

I always feel odd about the "these doors do not recycle" signs on the Red Line. After all, Cambridge, where I ride the Red Line, seems to have quite an extensive recycling program, and it's not environmentally sound for the Red Line doors to refuse to participate. The doors should either strive for more environmental consciousness or not advertise their noncompliance.

(Which is not so far off what I was thinking, either :-)

Yup, that's what I've assumed. The thing is, this sign is only on the inside. I once was trying to get into a subway car and stuck out my book or something as I was approaching the closing door and yeah, the door shut pretty tightly around it and practically yanked that book out of my hand as the train rolled off. I was just glad I hadn't stuck out my arm! That's a very dangerous feature if you ask me.

I agree. And I feel a bit dumb for not noticing that the signs are only facing in, too.

I noticed this morning that not all subway cars have them. I don't know if this means that only some of them are signed, or only some of them act like that, while the rest of them do rebound, or recycle, or recoil, or whatever the proper verb is.

I've wondered the same thing. I get concerned, especially in winter when more people are wearing big coats and long skirts, because when things are crowded it would be pretty easy for clothing and bags and such to get accidentally caught in the doors as people are leaving a train.

And people tend to carry a lot of stuff during the Getting Ready for the Holidays season, too. Yeah.

I think it *is* that the doors not marked such actually can "recycle", which is even worse than having them all non-recycling. I've seen the labels on the outside, but maybe they fall off, or get ripped off. They look just like bumper stickers.

Date: 2004-09-23 03:42 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] magid.livejournal.com
So, absent the few stickered ones that don't rebound, people should assume they do. Which I think is the assumption, since there's elevators and such that always do. I wish they'd be more vigilant about keeping them marked, then.

I wonder what % of trains have the non-rebounding doors, and whether they're slated to be replaced sooner rather than later...

All excellent questions. You could ask the T directly, but my feeling is they've been less than responsive of late.

On the MARTA in Atlanta we heard the helpful announcement, "Due to a mechanical fault, all trains are running normally."

That's excellent. I wonder if Boston could use that plan ;-).
