aka, orange edition dinner (all produce from the farm share or farmers market, except the dried coconut)
  • challah rolls, grape juice
  • turkey soup with carrots, sweet potato, celeriac, and leek
  • turkey breasts slow-baked with spicy peach salsa, over a mixture of red onions, sweet potatoes, dried yellow plum bits, and unsweetened dried coconut
  • roasted turnip with red onion
  • butternut squash kugel with cumin, cayenne, and ginger
(not made because guests were earlier than anticipated, and thought there was plenty of food anyway: green salad)
  • dessert from guest: gluten-free (unbaked?) vegan pumpkin pie with coconut
  • mandarins

In addition to the soup and the turkey breasts, here's the fate of the bird from Trader Joe's:
1. the turkey thighs, tail, and first joint wing (the 'drumstick') were baked over six-grain-and-pumkin-seed bread bits, with onion, mushroom, walnut, and diced apple (but unfortunately not sage)
2. the turkey drumsticks and second joint wings were baked with a bit of red onion, and a dry rub of cayenne, cumin, cinnamon, and sugar
3. the little bits that happen because I am not expert at carving a raw bird I marinated in a soy-Burgundy marinade (commercial), then sauteed with onion, lacinato kale, and diced mushroom (yummy breakfast!)

This week's constraints: less than two months before Passover, I'm trying to use up frozen things; one guest is allergic to gluten, so only the bread has any; and I'm trying to use the farm share produce, also what remains of the fish share, while minimizing buying other groceries.

  • When Pigs Fly rolls^, Bartenura Moscato 2009 (brought by guests)
  • turkey soup*^, from Thanksgiving
  • green salad* with cod*^ bits
  • potato*^ salad with pickles
  • sauerkraut*^
  • roasted sweet potatoes* and green peppers* with onion^, black pepper, and cumin
  • apple bits^ baked with marzipan and 'crumb' topping (a mixture of brown rice flour, sugar, cinnamon, allspice, and gluten-free bread crumbs)
    * organic
    ^ local

The salad was rather plain, being only greens (mesclun, arugula, red leaf lettuce) and cod, with balsamic vinaigrette. I'm not sure why I so wanted pickles in the potato salad, but I did, and the garlicky pickles pleased me. The apple dessert was not quite as I'd wanted: the marzipan got a touch scorched on the bottom (which surprised me: this is the first thing that has done so in this particular heavy covered casserole).
