The gym was pretty much empty when I went on Sunday. Since I think all con events encouraging movement are good, I started thinking about what it would take to get people to consider the gym to be an accessible place, like the panel about life on aquatic planets got people to the pool (though my impression was that the echoes meant people bunched up in one corner, rather than floating around considering the topic). First thought: have a challenge to find out whether Arisia could walk to Rivendell over the course of a weekend. Well, walk or bike or EFX to Rivendell, anyway. Perhaps have an official time slot (or two?) when The Hobbit would be read aloud (books on tape), and other people could add their mileage to the group total at other times as well, with something (ribbon? sticker?) for people anyone who put miles in.

Then I thought it would be cool to have a panel that was a "Meeting of the Minds" sort of talk show, with a moderator and other people in appropriate sf garb to portray their character. The glory of not being constrained to Earth history! Whee! (I suppose this could get sort of slashy, depending on how it's run and which characters were chosen/volunteered.)

And one other idea: a treasure hunt through the hotel. It could be on the gaming track, with sign-ups for however many people. There could be puzzles as clues as well as the more traditional riddle-y poetry (which I suck at; I'd need co-conspirators). Not to the level of Mystery Hunt puzzles, though, just one-offs, likely most of them logic puzzles rather than anything more involved. Not sure how many clues/puzzles per unit time; four per hour? So a one-hour slot = four puzzles x the number of teams (3 people to a team? 4?). Prizes would depend on whether I'd get additional funding; without any, I suspect it would be Cheapass games, chocolate, and whatever inexpensive sf books I could round up.

I've never suggested potential programs before; anyone able to enlighten me on the process?

Let me know your email address, and I will forward to you the most recent brainstorm email (brainstorm is a mailing list for planning the 'next' Arisia, for whatever value of next is, in fact, next. The head of programming just sent a nice long message about how she'd like programming to work next year, with suggestions about how to contact her for suggestions. You can likely also ask her how to get on the list (because I forget :-)

I saw some mention in the Arisia LJ about a brainstorm LJ group, but have been unable to locate one - at least for next year's Arisia; I found the LJ group for the Arisia just past. Does such thing exist, or is it all via email?

The LJ Program group has just gone bye bye, at the request of the head of programming (she wants to consolidate all discussion on the main Arisia list). So another place you can send ideas is to the Arisia LJ community (and I expect you'll get an email after doing so wondering if you want to be on the brainstorm list).

Actually, I've just looked at my latest brainstorm email, and found this:

To subscribe or unsubscribe via the World Wide Web, visit
http://arisia.org/mailman/listinfo/brainstorm

So that's another way of getting on board, I expect. Or email to brainstorm-request@arisia.org (should have looked before...).

Thanks. I did find the brainstorm list after poking back through several old Arisia LJ posts or something. They sure don't make it easy to find off the Arisia website (or make it easy to find next year's website).

I have some "accidental duplicate" sci-fi/fantasy books you're welcome to use as prizes, remind me whenever we end up getting together. ;-)
