magidThe gym was pretty much empty when I went on Sunday. Since I think all con events encouraging movement are good, I started thinking about what it would take to get people to consider the gym to be an accessible place, like the panel about life on aquatic planets got people to the pool (though my impression was that the echoes meant people bunched up in one corner, rather than floating around considering the topic). First thought: have a challenge to find out whether Arisia could walk to Rivendell over the course of a weekend. Well, walk or bike or EFX to Rivendell, anyway. Perhaps have an official time slot (or two?) when The Hobbit would be read aloud (books on tape), and other people could add their mileage to the group total at other times as well, with something (ribbon? sticker?) for people anyone who put miles in.
Then I thought it would be cool to have a panel that was a "Meeting of the Minds" sort of talk show, with a moderator and other people in appropriate sf garb to portray their character. The glory of not being constrained to Earth history! Whee! (I suppose this could get sort of slashy, depending on how it's run and which characters were chosen/volunteered.)
And one other idea: a treasure hunt through the hotel. It could be on the gaming track, with sign-ups for however many people. There could be puzzles as clues as well as the more traditional riddle-y poetry (which I suck at; I'd need co-conspirators). Not to the level of Mystery Hunt puzzles, though, just one-offs, likely most of them logic puzzles rather than anything more involved. Not sure how many clues/puzzles per unit time; four per hour? So a one-hour slot = four puzzles x the number of teams (3 people to a team? 4?). Prizes would depend on whether I'd get additional funding; without any, I suspect it would be Cheapass games, chocolate, and whatever inexpensive sf books I could round up.
