  • a full hanukia
  • unexpected gift bag
  • completing a shlichut from January
  • yesterday morning turkey sighting
  • warm enough to take off both coat and fleece for the walk in this morning
  • and wear sandals, which is good, because one Achilles tendon is acting up, so most of my shoes are not comfortable (not sure what to do about tomorrow with its projected 6-9 inches of snow...)
  • plus, no ice hazards
  • department lunch, with food brought for me
  • an orker-friend's excitement over getting a farm share next year
  • playing with Google maps street view, the ability to see 360 degrees at street level, now covering metro Boston (a little dizzifying, but still very neat (I wonder if that effect ties into why certain kinds of online games are not at all appealing?))
  • reviews of milk (link via Benzero)
  • making it to the gym (a trend I definitely need to continue)

From Boston Organics, a small, one-third fruit box, with
  • eight ounces of white mushrooms
  • two medium large zucchini
  • a biggish eggplant
  • a bunch of broccoli
  • three large yellow onions
  • five medium yams
  • five kiwi fruit (idea for what to do with them other than just eat raw, which seems not to be happening?)
  • two Hamlin oranges
  • four Satsuma tangerines

well, you did ask

Kiwis are shaped just about perfectly to be launched from a spoon-based catapult.

I admit, I had been thinking of alternate preparations as food... but you're right. Now I need to find some targets!

The turkey!

I usually just cut them in half and eat the innards with a spoon. I think the only other way I've seen them served is topping on cakes and pies and things like that. Possibly in fruit salads. Actually, I bet they'd go well with chicken. Or fish.

Kiwis are also useful for inducing a severe allergic reaction in some people.

This is a definition of 'useful' of which I was previously unaware.

Tuscan milk!

What comes to mind for the kiwi are tarts or something with pudding. Perhaps, though, some sort of compote or chutney using also the citrus?

I'm always unsure about cooking kiwis.

Unsure in what way?

I can't explain it very well. Something about how kiwis are just seem like they'd turn horrible if heat is applied. Perhaps I should just get over that and do something to them.

I can understand that instinct. The desserts don't involving applying heat to the kiwi.

Apparently, kiwi contains an enzyme that is a natural meat tenderizer. A kiwi-citrus chicken dish might be nice, or at least interesting, for a winter Shabbat meal.

If not, maybe add slices to or use in a dressing for a green salad.
