Florist mural
Apr. 16th, 2003 12:56 pmSome weeks ago, work was started on a mural on the side of the florist's building, on the corner near me. It's been progressing in bits and pieces.
Today, when I got back from the first grocery run, I found a bunch of people all working on it. Most of them were teens, with a couple of grown-ups nearby. I drifted over, despite the vegetable poundage I was schlepping, and got lots more of the backstory to this mural.
Two years ago, Skenderian apothecary got a mural put on it by one/some Cambridge Ringe & Latin senior(s) (it's a pretty cool one, actually). This year's crop of arty seniors wanted to do something like that, too. So their teacher, who lives down the sidestreet by my house, approached the florist with the idea. He liked it, since he'd been having problems with graffiti on that wall; taggers are a lot less likely to scrawl over someone else's work. He agreed, as long as he could approve the design. The teacher has given the kids free rein, letting them choose whatever greenery and bug life they want.
I watched some of them paint. A lot of them have photos or other printed pictures to work from, to give them the idea of the proper shapes, colors. It looks like it's going to be really nice.
