Birthday fest
Oct. 12th, 2010 09:58 amFirst off, thanks to everyone who sent, said, or posted birthday greetings and wishes: it was amazing to have all that happy joyousness floating around me this weekend.
Even though the holidays were safely over (unusual for my birthday), somehow I didn't manage to organize anything in particular, which turned out to be a good thing: there were far too many events this weekend already. I'm reserving the right to do something later and call it a birthday event :-).
Shabbat afternoon I walked up to Davis Square for HONK! fest. I got to hear (and see, a bit, sometimes, given the crowds) the Dirty Water Brass Band (which happened to play "Happy Birthday"!), the Leftist Marching Band, Emperor Norton's Stationary Marching Band (which had a lovely black and orange butterfly hovering above it for a while, in addition to fabulous music), and Afro Brazil (amazing drumming!). And not only did I get to hear and dance to amazing music, there were wonderful people to hang out with while enjoying it. (Social time is particularly appreciated now that my one weekly social engagement has been canceled.) And I was able to offer people tastes of liqueurs I've made (I brought MacIntosh, strawberry, and apricot for people to have a choice. The apricot seemed most popular overall, though there were definite apple proponents. I was surprised that the strawberry was noticeably third, since other times it has been a favorite.), which felt great, offering my art (in addition to showing off the hat I'd made, that is).
Late in the afternoon I walked over to Harvest Fest, which featured local food and beer, none of which I'd consume... but also featured entertainment by friends of mine (in the second shift, anyway), with HarmCityHeart on lyra, KlingonLandlady and Frobzwiththingz on silks, and the Zebbler Encanti Experience. (OK, and I was comped a ticket.) Which meant the chance to see yet more friends, and appreciate their artistry, under sometimes-challenging technical conditions.
(To be complete, I should mention that the following day I briefly made it to Oktoberfest in Harvard Square, making it a three-fest weekend.)

Date: 2010-10-12 06:35 pm (UTC)I forgot about Harvest Fest, mostly because I was distracted by Honk. I'm glad to hear it was fun.

Date: 2010-10-12 06:46 pm (UTC)Frankly, if I hadn't been comped a ticket, I would have stayed meandering Honk; there was such great music.

Date: 2010-10-13 02:44 pm (UTC)I think you would have liked the music at HONK better than the Harvest Fest.

If I may ask, when is your birthday on the Jewish calendar?
Tomatoes are plentiful at the Davis Farmers' Market today! They are expected to be next week too, apparently. My farmer friend said they are on a two-week rotation with harvesting the varieties at this point, and he expects they might next week have the Pink Ellas (which I may have at this point built up in my mind too much). Today's purchase included Red Brandywines and Carbons.
You didn't miss much with the Pink Girls. They were a little too sweet without being red-tasting enough, and a little bit grainy. They might have still worked for your liqueur idea, which incidentally impressed the woman who picked them out for me last week.
Still, yours are sitting on the counter, now ripened, sad that they did not get to meet you, but thinking you will be happy to know they are to be used as a fresh sauce for pasta, unless you are able to and wish to receive them today for yourself.
Thanks again for the referral to DeLeo's. I went by -- nice and helpful folks! I plan to work with them.

Date: 2010-10-13 09:40 pm (UTC)Yesterday I planned to go to the Davis Sq. farmer's market today, but I ended up going for a bike ride instead; I'm not going to beat myself up for exercising instead :-) (especially since it's been ages since I've been good about getting enough exercise). Thank you for letting me know I haven't missed my chance, that there will be more tomatoes next week too! (Though perhaps I'll manage to get to a different market tomorrow instead; I'm now in search of pears as well as tomatoes for alcoholic experimentation *cue evil scientist laughter*)
I'm so glad DeLeo's is working out for you! I find car issues to be a much greater annoyance than perhaps they should be, and they made it feel less horrible, all around.

Date: 2010-10-14 01:47 am (UTC)Kol hakavod on your bike ride! The weather's been so gorgeous.
Alcoholic experimentation!
Yes, sometimes I just don't know why any of us even drive.

Date: 2010-10-14 01:30 pm (UTC)I'm hoping to continue the bike trend today, before we get tomorrow's predicted rain.
Driving's convenient, and I don't have a trailer on my bike to schlep awkward/heavy things....

Date: 2010-10-14 04:47 pm (UTC)Go go go! Good for you. And thanks for the heads-up about the rain.
Oh, you took my last comment seriously. *sheepish grin*

Date: 2010-10-14 01:27 pm (UTC)(And that was part of why it would have been challenging to get to NYC Sunday.... If I could have been in two places at once, that would have been the other one.)
