Wednesday as I went to pick up the farm share, I noticed that mulberries are coming into season. It started drizzling, and yesterday was rainy, so today I took a basket and a folding chair to go out an pick mulberries. There are at least four trees nearby, some white, some dark. I mixed them together, since I wasn't going to have tons of either. I rinsed them and took the stems off, gently warming them with sugar until liquid came out. I boiled them for a bit, and the cups of fruit became two tiny jars of mulberries in their own syrup. I have no idea what I'll do with them (other than the perennial "put on vanilla ice cream!").

I went out on the porch to check on the plants since yesterday I'd found that something had dug holes in the pots with jalpenos, one of the tomatoes, and marigolds, which is Not Pleasing. Though to be fair, the plants themselves were intact, so obviously it could have been worse. (Plant status: already some pepper flowers and many buds, plus one green tomato.) Anyway, I looked out over the backyard, and realized that the roses had mostly just past their peak, so if I wanted to play with rose petals, now was the time. I got a colander, and went collecting. I have to say, these were the best petals I've picked yet, since they just came out easily, and were thereby ready to use. I brought them upstairs and poured boiling water over them. There won't be time to turn the now-red liquid into a syrup before Shabbat, since it hadn't yet cooled fully, but that's my plan. Perhaps some of it will have vodka added, to make a rose liqueur.

Somehow I wasn't too inspired for Shabbat, debating this and that, not sure what I wanted. In the end, I boiled my last loaf of gefilte fish, so I'd have some non-cheese protein around.

Then I started thinking about the ricotta I still had knocking around the fridge, and decided for another try on a crustless cheesecake-like dessert, mixing ricotta, whipped egg whites (well, beaten well by an immersion blender, but not to the level of soft peaks, which is what I really wanted, had I the right implement), egg yolks, sugar, and the zest and juice of two lemons. I baked that in a low oven for a long while, until the top looked reasonably brown.

I used a lot of the greens from the farm share yesterday, but still had some spinach and arugula. I debated making a pasta dish with them, but decided against (since I find it hard to be moderate with pasta, and I tend to feel slow and heavy after eating it), opting instead to saute them with onions, chickpeas, and black pepper. Still a bit starchy, but not nearly at the same level.

I still have a bunch of lettuce, but not enough other stuff I'm interested in to make a green salad for one, though I do like having something that crunches. I remembered the Hakurei turnips, and ended up cutting one into matchsticks, then dressing them with a mixture of chipotle mustard, olive oil, and honey.

Wholly off-topic, but my favorite sight today was seeing a little girl near the library holding on to the leash of her rabbit.
Speaking of which, it's a bit annoying that the main library will be closed all next week, though I know the branches will be open. Even more annoying was discovering that my library card has gone AWOL.

if you like mulberries, there are trees/bushes in my yard you can try to harvest. I don't think these are ready yet though.

rabbit on a leash!

I'd be happy to harvest your mulberries! Let me know when they're ripe-ish? (Once you're back, of course.)

It was totally cute, with one of those that go around the body twice, in front of and in back of the front legs, like for little dogs (though this was actually bigger than some of the smaller dogs I've seen around).

Thank you!

I just did a small batch of sour cherries this morning, so I'm trying to figure out if I have the energy for another batch of canning today.

Though I could attempt mulberry liqueur.... hrm.
