This week there was copious bounty, both a box and a bag of stuff:

2 small yellow watermelons
a medium cantaloupe
3 delicata squash
a large eggplant
6 medium potatoes
6 medium carrots
8 tomatoes (4 of them yellow)
a bunch of swiss chard
a medium bunch of cute small-medium beets with greens
a medium bunch of red radishes with greens
a medium bunch of mid-size white turnips with greens

When I got there, there were buckets and buckets of heirloom tomatoes: apparently they had so many that would rot that they'd brought a lot in, and I could take as many as I wanted. Also, someone had taken only some of the things in per's share, so the farmer offered whatever I wanted of the rest. I took a bunch of beets (given to someone at the Diesel who apparently has an LJ, but I don't know who) and a bunch of turnips (given to ZZBottom, mashed neeps lover). I took another 5 tomatoes for me, then distributed the rest between ZZBottom, Hrafn, and Cthulhia. Lady Veggie Bountiful. Definitely got more than my $'s worth this week....

I asked about how to bring in stuff to be composted, which they'd asked for in last week's newsletter. The farmer was there, and told me that he was hoping to get some kind of compostable plastic bags for this for next year: just fill and toss on the compost pile. I didn't know that existed

I was the one who took the beets; as promised, I cooked up the greens. [livejournal.com profile] fj said that they taste just like kale, so, good Dutch boy that he is, he wants them mashed with potatoes and served with sausage. I didn't have potatoes and sausage (and I had already made dinner). It should make a great pink mash; after all, they are beets.

The beet roots were yummy; the best I've had in ages. Thanks again.

Interesting- I've never thought beet greens and kale were similar. Perhaps that will help me like kale more... The greens do have enough red to make other foods pink, though not as darkly magenta as beet roots will.
Glad you enjoyed them!

Kale is a standard ingredient in a very standard Dutch dish, Boerenkool. Before her death, I asked FJ's mother for a recipe. By good chance, the Dutch version of Stop'n'Shop (I mean really; Stop 'n' Shop is actually owned by a Dutch conglomerate, who has their own chain of supermarkets in The Netherlands) had just published their monthly food magazine with a feature article on it. It took us a while to get an appropriately specific translation to figure out which cabbage-like plant one should use (although I just tried a quick google-search, which makes it clear that Kale is the one). So, if you are trying to learn to like Kale, and you are not a vegetarian, I suggest you type "Boerenkool" into Google, and follow one of the recipes you find there. Make sure you did a roast beef or a pot roast a week or so before, so that you have plenty of drippings ("jus") to pour over it. I don't recommend this as a summer dish; wait a few months.

...course, the only time I seem to have kale around is in the summer when it comes in the farm share...

Also, though not a vegatarian, I rarely cook red meat at my house, so it's unlikely I'll have drippings around when I want them. :-(

I beg to differ. "Goddess of Vegetable Bounty" would be a better title. *swoons over the tomatoes*

Ooh! a promotion!

(Btw, my dad keeps telling me "Don't beg; you're old enough to steal."....)

Glad you like the tomatoes. I wish I'd had more time and arm strength, had gotten more more more...
