I didn't sleep well last night, due to the onset o a cold, so I was awake to hear when my neighbor headed to the polling place about a block from home; it took at least half an hour for him to return. I decided to wait, until the approaching end of all tissues in the house got me moving.

So, to the polling place, to wait in a short line find I'd become an inactive voter. I went to the guy in charge of such things, showed ID (I used mail sent to my house, just because I could), then back to the slightly-longer line now waiting for ballots. It gave me time to look over the county-specific ballot questions, since I'd already thought about the state-wide ones (1 - independent car places getting information from car makers about repairs; 2 - people with terminal illness being able to get meds to commit suicide; 3 - making medical marijuana legal). All of the local questions were in the form of non-binding questions suggesting what the state senator and representative (in Boston, not DC) should vote on the following issues:

  • calling on Congress and the Prez to (i) prevent cuts to Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, unemployment, and veterans benefits, (ii) create/protect jobs by investing in infrastructure, including renewable energy, (iii) close corporate tax loopholes and raise taxes on income over $250K, and (iv) reduce military spending, bringing troops home, and redirecting those funds to domestic needs.
  • making legislation to regulate marijuana in the same way as alcohol.
  • calling on Congress to amend the Constitution to affirm that (i) corporations are not entitled to the constitutional rights of human beings, and (ii) Congress and the states can put limits on political contributions and spending.

After I got my ballot, there was a short wait for a booth to be available. The actual voting didn't take long. I went to the people who checked me off as having voted (it's a slightly different part of the building than previously, so it wasn't as clear what the flow was), then put my ballot in the machine, number 1296 at around quarter of four this afternoon.

Then it was off to acquire more tissues. I stopped in at the Johnnie's Foodmaster near my house, which is slated to close at the end of the month, to be transmogrified to a Whole Foods (::sigh::). Given how many shelves were already empty and/or blocked off, I can imagine they'll actually close a bit sooner. I had needed some more reusable bags, and decided to get two of theirs, for posterity.

And though I'd originally had plans to watch the results in company, this cold means I'll be drinking alone. (Well, probably not drinking, but whatever.)
