Bleh

Last night, after dinner (jasmine rice with chickpeas, sauteed onions and garlic and swiss chard, and sauteed onions and mushrooms and flounder fillets, followed by a variety of sorbets) on the porch with friends, I actually managed to get to bed at a reasonable hour.

It seems I did not do this soon enough: despite a decent amount of sleep last night, a sore throat had started by the time I woke up this morning. Feh. Are colds just lurking until anytime I get overtired to sneak in?

So today I have had multiple cups of tea, ginger (4), de-tox (1), and garlic (1). Also a cough drop, when I couldn't face another beverage. Still not feeling well, but mostly due to not seeming able to stop the oncoming cold, since the sore throat is still at the nuisance stage.

Asked a cow orker for suggestions. I was told
(a) Put a large crushed clove of garlic in half a cup of luke warm water before bed. Drink before getting out of bed the next morning. (for before the full blooming of the cold).
(b) Drink vinegar (apple is particularly good), sweetened with maple syrup (or another sweetener).
(c) Mix a teaspoon of sugar with an equal quantity of some form of ground hot pepper (cayenne?). Eat. (gotten from a trucker she got a ride with once)

Any other suggestions?

Veggie Booty (Week 11 of farm loot)

This week there was copious bounty, both a box and a bag of stuff:

2 small yellow watermelons
a medium cantaloupe
3 delicata squash
a large eggplant
6 medium potatoes
6 medium carrots
8 tomatoes (4 of them yellow)
a bunch of swiss chard
a medium bunch of cute small-medium beets with greens
a medium bunch of red radishes with greens
a medium bunch of mid-size white turnips with greens

When I got there, there were buckets and buckets of heirloom tomatoes: apparently they had so many that would rot that they'd brought a lot in, and I could take as many as I wanted. Also, someone had taken only some of the things in per's share, so the farmer offered whatever I wanted of the rest. I took a bunch of beets (given to someone at the Diesel who apparently has an LJ, but I don't know who) and a bunch of turnips (given to ZZBottom, mashed neeps lover). I took another 5 tomatoes for me, then distributed the rest between ZZBottom, Hrafn, and Cthulhia. Lady Veggie Bountiful. Definitely got more than my $'s worth this week....

I asked about how to bring in stuff to be composted, which they'd asked for in last week's newsletter. The farmer was there, and told me that he was hoping to get some kind of compostable plastic bags for this for next year: just fill and toss on the compost pile. I didn't know that existed
