Last week's fish share was canceled due to high winds, so instead of extending the season, this week's delivery was doubled up. Which meant that I got my first week of fillets at the same time as a whole fish, which meant not having the ease of just grab'n'go fish (as it were). On the other hand, I've put the already-filleted haddock in the fridge for tomorrow's holiday, so it will be freshly cooked.
This is the first haddock I've gotten, and functionally, it's similar enough to cod that I don't have to think about what to do. Which is why the whole haddock had the usual fate, this time with a mixture of white wheat flour, tandoori seasoning, mayo, chipotle mustard, and sesame-soy dressing. I did look it up online though, so now I know that it has a black stripe down each side. Racing stripes, as it were :-)

Date: 2010-05-17 10:55 pm (UTC)I told the guys at the pickup how I'd run over a fish yesterday, and their theories included fishermen losing one of their catch (I didn't know anyone got fish large enough to keep out of the Charles) or a bird losing its grip on the fish (though it didn't look at all splattered, just lying peacefully).
I'm realizing that I prefer the meatier texture and milder taste of cod to haddock. I think tomorrow's batch might be baked in tomato sauce.

Date: 2010-05-18 12:25 am (UTC)I can't remember if it was a haddock or pollack last year that was so lovely and richly flavored (as much as a white fish similar to cod can be richly flavored, but it was fabulous with butter in a way that cod is not).

PS. And this isn't the first time I've had a doubled-up share, since weather wreaked havoc with their winter schedule. At least this time I didn't have more than one whole fish to process (and with the holiday starting tomorrow evening, the timing's pretty good for me, actually).
