Somehow, Friday snuck up on me this week; I had no thoughts about what to make (other than the usual "use up the farm share" variety, plus a touch of "it's been a while since I've had fleishigs"), no guests invited (which usually comes with some restrictions or preferences). Nada. So I looked at what I had, figured out what I could get at Trader Joe's, and came up with a somewhat experimental menu.

  • flatbreads, grape liquid
  • chowder: red and yellow onions*^, potatoes*^, frozen corn*, soy milk*, with cod bits*^ to be added later
  • roasted sweet potatoes* with onions*^, black pepper, and cumin
  • chicken legs baked with red onion*^, cubed apple^, cabbage*^, the failed apple pickles from this fall*^, and some black pepper and brown sugar
  • possibly a green salad, if I'm inspired or something (I have lots of mesclun*^/lettuce*^ to get through)
  • baked fruit compote: raisins, boozy orange pieces*, walnuts, cinnamon, and grape juice baked in a covered casserole
    * organic
    ^ local

How does soy milk chowder come out? I have problems with curdling when I just add soy milk to hot coffee, much less cook with it.

I like it, enough to eat hot or cold. Sometimes it does get a skin or throw off other solids (usually if I'm not watching and let it boil rambunctiously), but the taste isn't a problem. And I don't have to worry about boiling it (I get nervous about boiling milk). Plus for me there's the whole non-dairy thing.
