Tuesday on my commute I started noticing the signs of students returning, with more people meandering around with luggage, storage pods open, more cars everywhere (especially coming off the Pike as I tried to get home). And then Wednesday came the news of Senator Kennedy's death, which, while I'd known he had terminal brain cancer, still came as a shock. I somehow expected him to be around for many months more, if not, somehow, manage to reverse the sentence. It feels incredibly poignant, the contrast of all the hope and forward-looking with all the memories and looking back.

He was not a perfect man, but he was an excellent senator, doing much for many, in a tenure started long before I was born. I can't imagine who will fill his seat, much less his shoes.

Perhaps it is inappropriate, but I envy him his manner of death. Not his disease, but having the chance to make his peace with himself, his family and friends, getting his house in order, and being allowed to die at home, rather than the added trauma of being in the hospital.
