The only known food issues for dinner this week: a guest who won't eat fruit in anything other than dessert (lemon is Not A Fruit for these purposes, as long as it's sufficiently not intact). So, no chutney on chicken, no apple in the salad, and so on. Of course, every time I host this guest, I find myself inspired by fruity recipes. Ah, well.

  • wine, bread from When Pigs Fly
  • potato-bean soup, with pinto beans, yellow-eyed peas, onion, garlic, potatoes, carrot, parsnip, and fresh rosemary, plus salt and pepper
  • roasted beets and rutabagas*
  • steamed broccoli
  • sauerkraut
  • chicken baked with jasmine rice, preserved lemon, and pine nuts
  • green salad: red leaf lettuce, arugula, jicama, scallions, pickled red onions, and cucumber, with rice vinegar dressing
  • baked fruit: apples, cranberries, and oranges with a topping of white wheat flour, chickpea flour, ground walnuts, and nutmeg
  • tea, dried fruit, nuts, mini meringues
    * "roasted swedes" just looks a bit too omnivorous of Scandinavians, or perhaps they've been the subject of speeches and jests

The food is done but for the salad. Now it's time to get the place straightened.

There was a lovely bottle of Lan Zur Cabernet Sauvignon 2007 brought, along with a plate of baked goods, also lovely.

The baguette from WPF was liked enormously; I've made another WPF convert, I believe.

The soup came out reasonably well, though it needed more salt. Not an exciting soup, yet for some reason, what I was in the mood for.

The steamed broccoli was extremely boring; it needs transmogrification (perhaps chopped more and put with pasta, or rice, or into an omelette, or on pizza, or into a savory bread pudding).

The chicken and rice were very much liked.

There were no scallions in the salad after all. It was a pleasant salad otherwise, but far from exemplary.

There were no oranges in the baked fruit. Otherwise, it ended up with a nice level of tartness.

Was the broccoli completely plain?

It was completely plain. I'd originally thought to saute it with summer squash and jalapeno, but ran out of cooking focus.

Broccoli, summer squash, and jalapeno!

I find that olive oil, garlic, lemon juice, and salt elevate plain broccoli tremendously.

Is today Tu B'Shevat?

The combination you mention sounds lovely too.

Today was indeed Tu B'Shvat, before dark.

Definitely! The ladies in the Davis Sq. store are very nice, too.
