First farm share delivery! Yay!

I got a farm share from Red Fire Farm again this year. They offered a fruit share, too, which I also got. I was expecting all leaves this week, and I'm pleasantly surprised.

  • a bunch of kale or collards (The collards were gone by the time I got there, but there was lacinato kale (my favorite) as well as green curly kale, so I'm happy.)
  • a head of lettuce or a bunch of radishes (I chose the red leaf lettuce; I'm not a huge radish fan.)
  • a third of a pound of spinach
  • a third of a pound of mesclun
  • a cucumber
  • a bunch of green garlic (Not garlic scapes, more like ginormous scallions (two feet tall!) that are garlic flavored. They smell lovely.)
  • a bunch of white (Hakurei?) turnips with greens

  • fruit share: a pint of strawberries

I also got this week's Boston Organics delivery. It's a small box, 2/3 veg. I also switched around my list of never-gets; I took most greens out, assuming I'll get them from the farm share, as well as a couple of other preferences.

  • a head of cauliflower
  • two delicata squashes
  • two smallish zucchinis
  • a pint of grape tomatoes
  • eight smallish Yukon Gold potatoes
  • two three oranges
  • two three kiwis
  • eight ounces of strawberries

I also got a dozen eggs, free-range, organic, and fairly local. They're brown, though, so this is a trial order to see whether there tend to be many blood spots.

We just started getting 1/2 dozen every other week, so we got some last week. So far, no blood spots. (I've used 4)

I'll hope that mine are like yours, then.

It feels a bit extravagant to pay so much for eggs, but I don't often use them in bulk these days, so not a a huge extravagance. Still, I could make cheaper food choices...

why do brown eggs have so many spots?

It's harder to candle brown eggs. When they shine a bright light on white eggs, it's easier to see whether there are blood spots inside. With brown eggs it's more difficult because of the color. I don't know whether having thicker shells (more likely with organic, free-range eggs) makes a difference.

And apropos of nothing, this is the 10Kth comment posted to my journal.

I tend to keep an eye on my userinfo, which has comments posted and comments in journal as two easily findable stats.

Will do.

First thought is to make a potato and green garlic not-omelette, but I'm not sure whether that will happen tonight, tomorrow night, or not at all.
