Weekend

Friday I stopped at the farmer's market, looking for spinach, which I couldn't find. On the plus side, there was something called 'water spinach,' which is long, eye-shaped leaves on thin green stalks, which I got as a substitute, and some other not-baby-bok-choi green on a wider, crunchier stalk that I got as well. Plus shiitake mushrooms, and currants (because they were there, and I've never had them fresh). Because I needed so many more veggies in my house :-).

Late afternoon was taken up with cooking. I'd already roasted potatoes, carrots, beets, and garlic on time bake in the morning. The afternoon included sauteeing the water spinach with onions and ground turkey (unfortunately, the extra lean, which I find doesn't have enough fat to have flavor, but that's what the TJ's downtown carries), then adding toasted pine nuts, raisins, and black pepper (which wasn't enough; maybe some hot sauce next time). The second protein was some hake steamed over the not-baby-bok-choi and beet greens. This would've been better had I not left the cover on after I turned the heat off; the extra steam got the fish just a bit overdone. Protein number 3 was fried slices of Chinese five spice flavored tofu added to a sautee of napa cabbage, some carrot and onion, and Szechuan spicy sauce. Non-protein dishes included cranberry sauce, adding the rest of the napa to the liquid from last week's Asian slaw, roasted zucchini and summer squash, and a plum-apple pie.

All of this meant that I had far more food than three people could eat, though since I hadn't been sure how many people there would be until the last minute, I was fine with that. Plus, leftovers. And this week feels like the first week I've really gotten through the produce. All I have left (uncooked or otherwise dealt with) from Wednesday's bounty is some lettuce, a couple of oranges, and some bananas. Yay.

Anyway. It was warm enough Friday that dinner on the porch was definitely indicated, and it was nice hanging out chatting, watching the lightning get closer, picking up thunder as it neared, until the rain finally came. (Which made me feel less guilty about forgetting to water the plants before Shabbat.)

Shabbat day I lazed around reading, mostly (I am now up to date with all Harry Potterage). The weather was great, and I felt I should take a walk, but it's really difficult for me to motivate myself to talk a walk to nowhere in particular without anyone to walk with. *sigh*

The electric company had sent a letter a couple of weeks ago saying that they'd be turning off power last Saturday at midnight, until Sunday 10 am. Or if that didn't happen, it would be this weekend. Since it didn't happen last weekend, I thought it would be this weekend. But it wasn't. I assume that they managed to do whatever it was while the power was out Tuesday-Wednesday, but I'm going to call during the week to be sure.

Today is a fast day, Shiva Asar b'Tammuz, the 17th of Tammuz, commemorating when the Romans first breached the walls of Jerusalem. It's 'only' a dawn to dusk fast, so last night I was snacking and drinking lots of water, and today's excuse for being a slug and staying around the house is not wanting to sweat. Which is a little lame, given that it's so nice, but that's my story, and I'm sticking to it. On the plus side, I took a roll of self-portraits, finished a sun-moon-star choker (in blue and purple), and got to chat with people online as we played Cities and Knights. And I'm looking forward to the end of the fast (something over an hour now), at which time I will down lots of water, then pick and eat the first sungold cherry tomatoes from my porch! Definite anticipation...

You are so cool. I'd certainly go on a leisurely walk with you!

Hey, thanks!

I don't know whether I'd manage a 'leisurely' walk, though; it really depends on the weather that day. If it's cooler and not too sunny, my walking pace can be reasonably quick. We could definitely figure out a time for a Shabbat walk. Email me (the LJ one works) with a day/ idea of time?

I walk slooooooowly. If you wouldn't be annoyed by that (no judgment if you would be, only acknowledgment that a walk might not work for us), maybe in August?

To be frank, it depends on my mood as to whether I can manage to walk slowly, just as a natural pace, plus slow = harder on my knees. If it's hot, though, I definitely slow down.

(It's ok to stay anonymous until whenever it feels right.)

Hmmm, it never occurred to me that walking slowly could be hard on one's knees. What are the mechanics behind that? I am familiar with many people who simply can't manage to walk at my pace, as you put it, as a natural pace.

I'm not sure what the mechanics are, actually. I know that slow strolling around a mall is much harder on my joints than a brisk five-mile walk, though the latter is more physically exhausting.

Huh, that's interesting. Well, I want for you to keep your knees, and the rest of you too, healthy and well!
