Another lesson last night in not making assumptions: I saw a man wearing a black velvet kippah, his head mostly shaved except for his long payes, which were twisted up behind his ears. Given that, I would not have expected him to be wearing a white T-shirt, knee-length shorts, and slip-on Birks.
First swag at the new job: a dark blue 2005 NCTM mug.
Someone who has lost weight and kept it off: successful loser
To whom it may concern,
I'm glad you Support Our Troops, but I would prefer that your support does not involve putting a sticker on my car. I notice that you carefully lined it up with my parking permits; perhaps you should look for a job in layout or design?
Vegetable fates, so far: roasted some zukes and squish, and the cauliflower; sauteed the corn with caramelized onions, scallions, soy milk, and cayenne. Next up: stir fry carrots, napa, and onions with tofu; put the rest of the cabbage into the end of the Asian slaw dressing from last week; roast more veggies (more zukes? potatoes? beets? garlic?); make a plum pie, perhaps with some apple as well; orange-cranberry relish.
I saw the headline "Lawmaker fears candy sparks taste for drugs," and had to find out what would make a (state) legislator say something quite that stupid. I mean, Snickers --> cocaine? But it turns out that there are marijuana-flavored lollipops (Who knew? Well, lots of people, surely, but not me.), and Rep. Aaron Peña would like to ban them in TX. The Houston Chronicle article goes on to say, "Makers of the candies say they aren't marketing to children and accuse some politicians of trying to make a name for themselves by targeting their product." The candies have the flavor, but not the chemicals that make people high. I can see why someone might want to outlaw them, but the product itself isn't illegal. Restricting them to adults, along with cigarettes and alcohol, that makes more sense to me.

Date: 2005-07-21 03:30 pm (UTC)Two points: beer is legal for those over 21 (or is it 18 again?), while marijuana is (currently) illegal for everyone (including those who raise their own and use it for medically-recommended pain relief, which I find absurd). Also, I don't know how similar non-alcoholic beer is to alcoholic beer, whether it's more or less similar than the tastes of this candy and marijuana.
