Well, I'm down a tooth, and so far, so good. I look like half a chipmunk, with the gauze in my mouth, but otherwise it's ok. Of course, this might be because the novocaine (or whatever) hasn't wholly worn off yet, or the ibuprofen kicked in already, but I'll take it.

The trickiest part for them was to get a decent x-ray; they took four of them, at last resorting to a machine that circled my face. Neat technology, but noisy. And they didn't cover the plastic thingy I was supposed to bite, either. Oh, and on an earlier try, they forgot the lead apron. Once they had the pictures, it was pretty easy. Er, for some value of easy. The anaesthesia is incredibly bitter, and I needed a lot of it. It's weird to have half the roof of my mouth swollen. And the absolute worst was hearing the cracking sounds, which made me want to shiver.

I've got prescriptions for ibuprofin, vicodin, and amoxicillin. I'm not to rinse, spit, smoke, or use a straw for 24 hours. No hot food for 2 hours. I'm to change the gauze every 30-40 minutes. Interestingly, if there's more than normal bleeding, they suggest biting on a tea bag (not herbal) for half an hour (of course, if that doesn't help, call them, yadda, yadda, yadda). Toomorrow I'm to start rinsing three or four times daily, but the instructions say warm water, not salt water. Huh. The stitch she put in is supposed to dissolve on its own; I'm the tiniest bit concerned about that, since my dad had an unfortunate incident with stitches that were supposed to dissolve and didn't, not how they were supposed to.

Other pluses: I have one less cavity to fill. I have a great excuse to eat pudding. The office had an excellent view of Copley and the Hancock building, from an angle I hadn't seen before (the reflections were excellent).

Bill Cosby -- "The Dentist" (http://worldwordweb.com/listening/billcosbythedentist.htm) transcribed. It's much better heard; if I can find the cassette I have it on (taped ages ago from Dr. Demento), I'll make you a copy.

Thank you! It's not hurting yet, and the rest is remembering to do stuff at the right time; I hope it'll go smoothly.

Im glad it went well for you. I hope the recovery is not too bad.

i wonder what the tea is supposed to do to help stop the bleeding...

So far, so good.

I'm not sure about the tea; I know it's an astringent, but I don't know about clotting.

Ah, for the powers of Google.

Black tea has tannin, which can help in forming blood clots.

I had no idea that tannin encouraged clotting... thats very useful information!

anyway... get some rest... hope you feel better.

Weirdly enough, I don't yet feel bad, just inconvenienced (gauze in the mouth). Hoping it stays this way...

I had problems with straws a week after getting my wisdom teeth out, but then you said you never use them.

I'm glad to hear that the extraction went well, and that you will finally have at least one smoke free day under your belt.

No lead apron for an xray? I would have complained.

I tend not to drink much other than water, so straws don't come my way often.

Thanks. I should check under my belts to see if I put any other smoke-free days there.

It happened so quickly, I forgot to say anything about it. Communication wasn't always easy; a lot of the people working there had accents I didn't understand sometimes, and the doctor was muffled enough to be hard to hear, too.

If I were going back there, I'd say something, though.

You could always fill the prescriptions and sell 'em on the street for a profit. No one would believe you're a drug dealer. Esp. with the gauze dangling in just the right way. If you got caught, you can say the meds made you loopy and you didn't know what you were doing :)

Heh. I'll take the amoxycillin, and the others are for pain, swelling, and such; I can't imagine anyone would want them, even if I were selling.

Pain killers? Dude. Those would sell on the street so fast it'd make your head spin (but hopefully not hard enough to knock the gauze out of your mouth).

...

Or so I've heard.

Rumoredly,
Hyoun

You may not be feeling the pain now, but don't go selling your prescriptions until you've given it a couple of days - it could start hurting a bit more tomorrow. Not to scare you, just a caution.

I just filled the prescriptions, and those painkillers aren't going anywhere other than inside me for the foreseeable future.

Just before that, on the release form they list one of the possible complications as cracking the jaw, which was scary just to see. I hadn't realized how much lower/upper made a difference: apparently for lower, there's the risk of jaw stuff, while for upper wisdoms, there's the chance of opening a hole into the sinuses.

This morning it's a bit achy, pre-ibu, and no food seems to be particularly appealing, but otherwise heading for better :-)
