A few non-hat crochet projects

magidI've made a few crocheted things recently that aren't hats.
A friend with a most impressive beard asked me for what I think of as a beard bag, and he calls a beard cozy. I still don't know why (but then, I tend to overheat rather than be cold....), but it seemed like a fun thing to play with. I decided to put flames on it, though I think I should have started them lower, and it turns out that his mustache is too exuberant to have the mustache part work, so I'll likely crochet it to the rest of the bottom. I thought it would be too heavy to have ear loops holding it on, and having two pairs of ties gives more flexibility.
I brought up the rest of the yarn I'd put in the basement, which included a bunch of things I'd started and abandoned. At one point I had some idea for using granny squares to make... I don't remember what, but as I lay in bed one night, I realized that they could make a very nice bag. I pieced them together, wanting a rectangle that was longer than tall, so it wouldn't gap, and would accommodate pads of paper or hardcover books. I put the more openwork 'squares' on the flap, where they'd be seen but wouldn't have to hold stuff in. And I doubled the squares for the handle, since it would get more strain (perhaps I should have for the bottom as well; I didn't think of it). I realized why I don't much care for granny squares: there's lots of ends to weave in, which I find boring. (It didn't help that this was worked using a fairly small hook.)
I had a brainwave Sunday night. I had some black underwear that was no longer usable, but the top by the waistband was fine. I cut off the rest, then crocheted loops through the bottom in tiny thread (just puncturing the cloth with the hook; small metal hooks can be much more dangerous than the TSA thinks :-). I laid out a rainbow ring of yarns and ribbons on my living room floor, moving them around until the progression seemed right, then started attaching things. I crocheted strips of yarn, and either tied on (narrow) or crocheted on (wide) ribbon. Oh, and some tubular crin. Once I'd worked my way around, I tied some small silver bells (not jingle bells) to the bottom of some strips. I think I need to reinforce the original fabric (and possibly the elastic), but the rest is now done.
