Porch update: I was thwarted in getting the tomatoes, herbs, and lettuces as I'd planned last night. I did manage to transplant the rosemary and the lavender. The latter, in particular, was looking yellow; I'm hoping having more dirt will help it past the current malaise. And while I was out, I noticed the chives are already started, as are a number of morning glories, still with their first pair of butterfly wings. And the ginger is sending up a new shoot, so all is not lost there, either.

I plan to get the tomatoes and some herbs tonight, and round out the food-plant population soon. Maybe this will be the year I finally get the porch organized as I've envisioned it.

A link from Cyan_Blue, a link about the loss of free speech in our country continuing, especially in schools. It makes me shudder.

I have indulged my ant tendencies, with three half-pint jars of confiture de rhubarbe. I didn't peel the rhubarb, so the contents are much more intensely red than what's pictured in the article.
(As usual, I am fascinated by the names for old-fashioned fruit desserts that have gone out of fashion: buckle, slump. I wonder if fruit needs more buckles 'cause it slumps?)
(Side thought: rhubarb seems to be the springtime version of cranberries, with that tartness I like so much.)

I wish I didn't have the blahs. Nothing's particularly wrong, but my emotions are low. I hope it changes soon.

Oh. My. Fucking. GOD. That's just appalling! And I didn't know that bit about the US Treasury threatening people about making translations from certain languages. Eww :(

Makes me wish I knew Farsi or something so I could practice a little civil disobedience.

Yeah, nasty every way you look at it, in both situations. Free speech is supposed to be what we're about...

And this article didn't mention the particulars mentioned in a few others I found when I Googled on the teacher's name; there are a couple of social studies teachers in NM facing loss of pay, disciplinary action, etc, for having had both pro- and anti-(Iraqi) war posters up in their rooms. There was even a quote by some nimnul with power (a principal? I don't remember.) about how the pro-war posters weren't pro enough. !!!
