Bits and pieces
May. 19th, 2004 03:25 pmPorch update: I was thwarted in getting the tomatoes, herbs, and lettuces as I'd planned last night. I did manage to transplant the rosemary and the lavender. The latter, in particular, was looking yellow; I'm hoping having more dirt will help it past the current malaise. And while I was out, I noticed the chives are already started, as are a number of morning glories, still with their first pair of butterfly wings. And the ginger is sending up a new shoot, so all is not lost there, either.
I plan to get the tomatoes and some herbs tonight, and round out the food-plant population soon. Maybe this will be the year I finally get the porch organized as I've envisioned it.

Before the clouds covered the sky this afternoon, there was a brief rainbow.

I have indulged my ant tendencies, with three half-pint jars of confiture de rhubarbe. I didn't peel the rhubarb, so the contents are much more intensely red than what's pictured in the article.
(As usual, I am fascinated by the names for old-fashioned fruit desserts that have gone out of fashion: buckle, slump. I wonder if fruit needs more buckles 'cause it slumps?)
(Side thought: rhubarb seems to be the springtime version of cranberries, with that tartness I like so much.)

I wish I didn't have the blahs. Nothing's particularly wrong, but my emotions are low. I hope it changes soon.
