Best quote from a stupid ad: "Put on the meat ponchos!" Which rather makes it sound like I'm like I'm living in a KoL universe.

I did not eat pie on pi day. I did eat macaroni, so there were pis in there somewhere.

And on another mathematical note, yesterday's XKCD, on mathematical fairy tales.

Despite todayyesterday's brief snow (were the sidewalks missing their snowbanks?), it's spring: I've seen both snowdrops and crocuses.

What's the "ideal body"? Here are some, photos of bodies optimized for a variety of different Olympic sports. (Which doesn't get me exercising particularly more, unfortunately.)

A note found at MIT:

  • Stay on top of classes. I want two A's this semester
  • Don't lose a hold on friendships/relationships. If I wrong anybody, especially my friends, make it right
  • Stay in shape. Being physically strong makes you a stronger person in general
  • Keep drawing. I love to draw. Don't let my passions get away from me.
  • I'd like to make many more deep friendships within SAE. When life has you in a chokehold, you need friends to save you.
  • I want to wash my face more often. A clean face goes far.
  • Be healthier. You only have one life. Don't short-live it. Think: moderation.

With slight variations, I have to say, whoever wrote this has similar goals to what I want. If this is the writing of an undergrad, I'm impressed: I was not nearly this coherent, thoughtful about my life (though if you'd asked me at the time, I would have said I was....).

This year's Burning Man theme is Rites of Passage. Which of course has me thinking of lefts of passage, or wrongs of passage. And since I often end up painting clothing for the event, I'm thinking of a long-sleeved T-shirt, with things such as birth, first steps, graduation, driver's license, and so on down the right arm, and things such as first fall, first cavity, first being bullied, first car accident, and so on down the left.

I read the MIT note and think, how far are you fooling yourself bucko? Major tradeoffs between those goals are gonna be necessary unless you're superhuman...

Well, yeah. But at least the brain is in the right place. And hey, a clean face goes far and doesn't take long :-).

Eh; true, but striving for perfection (or at least excellence) and failing to achieve it in all spheres is, IMO, better than deciding not to bother striving. Striving for excellence makes it much more likely you'll achieve at least good.

Also, can I say I love love love "A clean face goes far"? Amen, anonymous brother or sister. And is, furthermore, eminently achievable.
