I'm too lazy to make an official LJ poll, but I'm curious, so...

You're in a dark room (perhaps in bed, or a blackout, or something), talking on the phone. Are your eyes open or closed?

Postscript: Would your answer change if you had been woken up by the phone?

Open in general, closed if I'm trying to visualize something complex to describe it over the line.

That sounds like regular conversation :-), so light/no light wouldn't affect it.

Depends. Is it pitch black, can't see anything at all? Then closed. Is it dark, like at night, where you can still make out detail? Then open.

Dark, like at night, which I don't usually think of as being able to make out detail...

Maybe I've gotten too used to having streetlights outside my window.

For your second question, eyes open, to make sure I didn't fall asleep again.

The times I was away from electric lights at night it was definitely *dark*.

It depends on the conversation, and some other non-environmental factors.

Even in the dark?

Like me wanting to have a pen in hand to be able to concentrate on shiurim, even if I don't write notes, I suppose (that's why it's hard to focus on shiurim on Shabbat).

open. (if I'm in bed, I either have my glasses off and can't see anyway, or am watching all the glowing things in my room)

Ooh, glow-in-the-dark things!

When I was little I so wanted to have stars on my ceiling. Somehow the slanting unfinished wood ceiling meant I never even asked my parents if they'd care.

Does that mean you had them, or you didn't? I didn't start having glowing things until college, but now I have a ton, and love it.

I didn't.
And somehow I never got back around to getting them. Are they a pain to take off if you want to reposition them?

Not sure; I haven't moved mine. However, the ceiling stars are stickers, and probably act as such, so a second sticking wouldn't be as strong.

We found out that our attic ceiling has glow-in-the-dark stars when our first house guests told us. :-) (They're small and then blend in during the day, so we just never noticed.)

That's so cool!

I just have to ask: in astronomically correct configurations?
(I don't have enough knowledge to do this myself, but always thought it would be neat.)

Sadly, no. Not even the dippers. (I wouldn't know enough to be able to do it either, unfortunately.)

I can't hear without my glasses.

Yes, you read that correctly.

I understand that, actually. Glasses => brain on, focused.

Possibly related: the friend in college who couldn't talk when I held his hands behind him.

open. usually glasses on, too.

same if I was woken by the phone, though the glasses might not be on in that case.

Generally speaking, open.

If I'd just been woken up, was still very tired and not inclined to really wake up, then they might be closed because of that. Then I'd let the other person do the talking and fall asleep. :)

It really depends on the situation. If I'm wide awake, they might be open. If I am trying to visualize something, they're closed. If I've been woken up, they're probably closed. If I am trying to see things in the dark...well, you get the point. I have no default eyelid position for telephone talking in the dark.

Something about this wording made me giggle.

Situational makes sense to me.

Commenting before reading others:

Open. Unless I'd been woken up, in which case I would be fighting between closed (sleeeeep) and open (so as to not fall asleep mid-call).

Closed => sleep even if you're talking, not just listening...?
