Friday afternoon
Aug. 15th, 2003 03:06 pmI stopped in Brookline this afternoon. It's hot, hotter than it's been in days, and sunny, but with much lower humidity, so I find I can handle it a bit better. Still, it's very bright out, a day for a sun hat. Luckily, I have such a hat. I put it on, and started my errands. And started to feel a bit odd. Here I am, buying food for Shabbat, wearing a hat and skirt, and I can just imagine the other people around me assuming I'm married [1], and making assumptions about what kind of religious person I am because my mid-longish hair is hanging out, rather than in a snood or up under the hat. I kept thinking about how that is the wrong assumption in this case. I'm definitely single. It felt strange, though, to be projecting someone I'm patently not, somewhat uncomfortable, too.
As I was leaving one store, I was given a calendar. I hadn't been thinking about the new year, and it's practically upon us. It's not cool enough to start thinking about that just yet, with the heat of the summer just starting.
I got home to find notices on the mailbox. The first is a letter about after-hours construction on my street this coming Monday night, from 7 pm to 9 am. They're going to be working on some water mains, and decided this time would be least interuptive of businesses and people's lives. It means that there are going to be floodlights and standby generators, but they assure me that there should be no impact on water service. The last time there were generators just outside my house, I couldn't sleep all night. I start to think I'll try staying somewhere else that night. And the other is a notice of water service interruption, on Monday, from "10 pm to 6 am" (copyedit, anyone?). It's possible that that won't be a problem, with those times, but... I really think staying somewhere else Monday night would be a smart move.
