Yesterday afternoon I started beta testing a CD-ROM, which seems to be perfect fast-day work, being mostly brain-free, making sure links and PDFs are correct.

I treated myself after work, going to check out a used book store in West Concord I'd not been to before. It's closing, sort of, August 20, turning into an online vendor only (through Abebooks). Twice-Told Tales is a pretty nice bookstore, considering they've been running extreme sales for some weeks now (Note for locals: currently, buying 4 or more books gets a 50% discount off the marked price.). Not so much of interest in the kid books section (where I always seem to end up first), but quite a lot elsewhere, and well-organized, too.

I resisted many things, including a number of records, since I have no record player. Still, it was hard to pass up Tolkien reading and singing from Lord of the Rings, and I keep wondering if I should go back... There were also a number of Alices, many editions I'd not seen before. But having something like 7 already made me just strong enough. And there were lots of other items that made me think of this friend or that. They had some Boston-themed fridge magnets, which I was going to buy... until I noticed that they had "Radcliff". Ugh.

In the end, I kept myself from getting more than four books, and one or two other items. I didn't have time to check out the quilting store next door, which I suppose is a good thing. Perhaps another excursion to Concord will be in order when I have more time.

I stopped at one of the large farm stands on the way home. They're next to a pond, which looked rather muddy. When I looked more closely, though, I could see that there were lots of goldfish just faintly visible. There was also a sign to beware the snapping turtle, and I noticed dispensers for both fish food and goose food. They turned out to be white geese, nosing along the shore of the pond.

Yet again I resisted buying much, except for a huge bunch of organic basil and another bunch of organic scallions, big enough that they didn't really fit in the bag.

Home to welcome the squawkers for a visit, then to potluck, bringing the second double chocolate bread pudding. It was good to see people, and the chatting distracted me from the waning minutes of the fast. Of course, there was much food talk: I'm not the only one with a farm share, and there are many willing cooks :-). I may end up making watermelon pickles this year...

Finally, it was over, and I had a big glass of water to celebrate. Strangely, I didn't eat much, and haven't eaten much today, either. I'm hoping my appetite returns soon.

Many thanks to those who put up with my crankiness and poor time planning yesterday.

How extreme is extreme? And, kids books aside, how is their selection? I might be interested in checking this place out.

Extreme = 50% off the marked price. And they have a decent selection. If you're going, the store will be closed as of August 20, so there's not a ton of time. It's at 79 Commonwealth Ave, in West Concord.
