I went in to get a single book, a copy of the new Bill Bryson book for my dad, for his birthday. Really, one book. That's all.

I'd forgotten how this place is a crack house for book buyers.

It's huge (just the remainders section is larger than a lot of book stores), and since it is set up unlike any other book store, there are odd serendipital finds. How odd? Well, the main fiction section is set up alphabetically... by publisher. Within that, alpha by title. There is a set of Books in Print set out for patrons, and it is frequently used. Going over to look through that brings me to some of the remaindered books, which included two Edward Goreys. Can't pass that up, of course. And how could I not check the remaindered kids book section? They're on sale, after all... And there, in addition to a couple of other things, there were a couple of DWJ books. In hardcover. Remaindered. Yeah, like I could pass that up.

Not surprisingly, I had a big stack of books by the time I made it to the cash register. Only one book wasn't remaindered, though, so despite the money I'd not thought I'd spend, I still felt somewhat virtuous...

And of course, only later did I remember there was a cool sand castle book, which made me think of having a sand castle party, some Sunday afternoon at a beach. Perhaps I shall have to go back to pick that up...

oh my . . .

Sounds like a place where, if one wants to not spend much money, one should go in with only a small amount of cash, and no plastic. *drool*

I don't let myself go there often, even though it's close to work...

Wait - is this thing an on-going, same location all the time kind of deal? (Then where does "Mobile" come into play?)

This is indeed an ongoing same location sort of deal. What I've gathered is that it used to be the warehouse for distributing Scholastic books to kids who'd ordered them through their schools (I remember getting those order sheets, and the excitement of choosing books. Did you get those?). I think that's where the 'mobile' part came in. But it's a huge warehouse-like bookstore now, an amazing place to wander through...

Yeah, we got the Scholastic book things :)

I must never know the location of this place. It would be a Very Bad Thing.

I've still never been there. I need to go, someday...but then, as I'm trying to economize, and read everything I have already that I haven't read yet, now's probably not the time?

Know anyone who needs a sysadmin, so I can feel OK about buying books again? :)

Someday, when all my friends are fully employed, I'm going to take everyone on a trip out there. (You're the second person I've heard just this week say that you should try reading the books you already have instead of buying more. Time for a bookswap/booklend, maybe...)

I wish I knew someone needing a sysadmin...

Btw, seeing the Edward Gorey books there made me think of you. I assume you already have/read The Headless Bust and The Unstrung Harp?

When are you going to be in book-shopping mode again...?
(Not that I'd be a book-enabler. Oh, no.
Well, maybe just this once... :-)

I have zero hours last week and so far this week. I'm on vacation next week. That leaves 3 days the following week before my contract expires.

That leaves me with little leeway for book binging. *sigh*

OTOH, student loan paid off :)

Congrats on the student loan, then; book buying will come sometime...
