Some of what's chasing around my brain

magidI'm trying to decide what color the half-walls in the bathroom should be. Most of the rest of the room is white marble tile (ie, white with grey lines/clouds), with a thin pencil edging in black marble (with white bits), and there are no windows (fixtures are white and chrome, if that makes a difference). First thoughts were a warm red or a bright blue (sky!), even though conventional wisdom is that darker colors will make the room even smaller than it already is; I'm not interested in whites/beiges/pastels. Any thoughts or opinions are welcome. (Also still to be finalized: lighting fixtures. Also shower curtain, someday, but that's easier, somehow.)
I found the first few flakes of the season on my windshield wipers this morning. It's extremely odd that not only the midwest, but Atlanta and Paris and Ediburgh have all had noticeable snow before we got any. Definitely a sense of impending something, however.
I've had a cold for about the last week, with the usual progression of sore throat to stuffy nose to light cough (though happily, not down in the chest). I'm tired of it. (Also, just tired, since I haven't been managing enough sleep, or good enough sleep when I do, despite extra pillows for elevation.)
I've finished three hats in the last three days (a red brimmed hat, a tall pink hat with front ruffle, and a fuzzy light blue beret); I need to photograph them and put them on Etsy. Two other recent hats that I've already photographed: a ruffled autumn hat, and a dino hat (Yes, it's more fish than dinosaur. But the inspiration for it was a party with a dino disco theme.). Also finished: another film necklace, this one with zigzagging color.
Related to that: I've ordered a bunch of a particular black yarn online, and am anticipating its arrival: I have a bunch of hats I want to make with it (long fish tails, rainbow dreads, etc). I also have some tubular crin I want to figure out how to best use on hats (though for one, I think I'll need some white yarn, which I've mostly avoided until now, because it shows dirt so easily).
I've been getting through my pickled beets too quickly, so I ordered another 25-pound bag (this time, specifying red beets, since I think the beet flavor is most intense with red pickled beets). I need to pick up more pint jars (again), also rice and cider vinegars. Last time I ended up with 33 pints; I assume this bag will be the same.
Most recent booze play: apricot liqueur from home-frozen apricots (done mostly because I needed to do a demo and didn't have fresh fruit around). And still in process are kiwi and pomegranate, both tiny batches I did on the spur of the moment because Trader Joe's had organic ones. The kiwi should be fine; I'm still unsure about the pomegranate, since I didn't attempt to crush the seeds. Perhaps another batch with lightly-crushed seeds would be a good comparison.
I've been delving (a bit too much...) into the offerings on Hulu, using the excuse that I could be productively crocheting while watching. Which is true, but not a good pattern to cultivate, either (crocheting while being social would be much better, for instance...). Anyway,rhya and I finished watching Twin Peaks recently (Yes, I know, it was on aeons ago. I'm behind the times, 'k?), which meant that stumbling across one of the recent episodes of Psych set in "Double Spires" was particularly funny. (Also impressive, in a completely different way: a recent steampunk episode of "Castle".)

I suggest a bright green for the bathroom. Hang a plant from the ceiling or wall. You don't have windows, so bring the outside in!

Date: 2010-12-14 10:50 pm (UTC)I'm just easily bored, I think: once it's got a pattern, it feels less like creating and more like... production? Or I'm lazy, in not wanting to have to deal with a pattern. Sort of like cooking without specific recipes :-)
There's no light on in the bathroom except when being used; I suspect a plant would die, quickly, were it subjected to that little light. I've been leery of green, partly because of too much time spent in institutionally green spaces, even though this would not be that green.
What's your sister's LJ name? (And anyone's welcome to friend and/or poke through the memories section, which has menus and other food writings.)

My white-with-black-tiled (but naturally-lit) bathroom has blue walls and I find it quite pleasant; it's a lighter blue than you're talking about, but bold would work too. If it's not too close to "pastel", a rich peach could also do well. Or there's always bright, perky, exactly-balanced yellow. (If you have to err one way or the other, though, I'd err toward red rather than toward green -- the latter treads too close to "sickly" in a bathroom, I think.)
I love the idea of red walls and no one ever does it. Be bold. :-) (And if you do it, you must get a shower curtain that is reminiscent of newsprint...)

Date: 2010-12-15 04:34 am (UTC)I keep thinking that when I get around to painting the dining area, something like a rich peach would be lovely, hungry but not too hungry, somehow. I don't think I want yellow, for some reason, and I agree about the issues around green (to the gills....). Though red might hint of blood, I suppose, but on the whole, is a warmer color.
I've seen red walls a couple of times, and always found them wonderful. I love the newsprint suggestion, too :-).

Date: 2010-12-15 04:52 am (UTC)I was unclear. Unless yellow is exactly balanced, it will be either slightly greenish or slightly redish. The latter could work; the former is a bad idea in almost any context. (My office is exactly-balanced yellow; once I picked out the paint chip I asked the guy at the mixing station to confirm my assessment on this. He looked at the formula in the book, looked at me, and said I had a good eye. :-) )
I don't know if I'd do it in your bathroom, but a rich forest green could be nice on walls. Institutional green is usually more sickly.

Date: 2010-12-21 12:24 pm (UTC)(I'm not enough of a fan of pink in large quantities to choose it. Or at least, every time I've seen pink used, it's a 50s sort of pink, which puts me off considering other shades, somehow.)
