Firefly 2010
Jul. 5th, 2010 09:26 pmSome bits thereof, anyway.
- Returning to the same land for a second year made everything more home-like. I'm still not thrilled with the linearity of the space and the lack of pond, but otherwise it's quite nice. Though there had been talk of camping higher up (leading to a night walk on arrival with some luggage around the whole site in search of particular campmates), I ended up camping in the same place, too. It's a quieter corner, near the entrance (= less schlep in either direction and less distance to Portapotties), which suited me just fine, able to go out and see the fabulousness people made/brought while having a more chill space to retreat if necessary.
- Using a Springbar tent for the first time, and having it work well. Shibarismurf helped with set-up, but take-down was solo (note to self: make sure there's a hammer for this). Luckily I snagged a cart for the trek to and from parking, and the rest of the time it was great. Now to consider a mat or air mattress under the sleeping bag, and perhaps some interior lights (solar?).
- It didn't get very cold at night (I didn't need the long johns), but even so, I should have brought a long-sleeved shirt.
- Friends, new and old. Really, everything else could be amazing, and without wonderful people, it would be as dust.
- Yay for a less rainy June than last year: there was extremely minimal mud, so I was able to use sandals rather than rainboots the whole time.
- Umbrella-and-fiber-optic-cable jellyfish hanging over a trail.
- Seeing almost all of the ObNobs movies made over the years for the 48-hour movie project (all of which were excellent, and pretty funny, ranging from an investigation of a rigged sausage-eating competition to a Romeo-and-Juliet-esque tale of trampires and straight-laced people, and more).
- Bike chain moose in a little space woven of sticks.
- A date from a 7-year-old.
- Little green lights that looked like fireflies.
- Real fireflies.
- Shooting stars.
- Having my hats appreciated. Also booze.
- More fruit than I usually eat, all gifts, since I failed to bring any fresh fruit. Actually, I did a very poor job of planning food, and while I didn't run out or anything, I need to pay attention next year.
- Other gifts of time, help, snacks, and an ear cuff.
- Listening to friends perform on the improv stage, especially appreciated because techno/house/etc. doesn't really make me want to dance. (And I was unfortunately too zonked to dance the one time I heard classic rock).
- Huge propane flame sculptures, wired up to a Rock Band drum kit and to a Wii-mote. Also with color changes! It was too hot, and the sound made me jump more than once, but they were way cool too.
- Dressing up is fun. Incorporating a Utilikilt is wonderful because the pocketses carry so much (thanks again to Currentlee!).
- The night of the bug burn was much nicer because I was with a group of friends.
- The Miss Firefly contest was as extravagant as always, with major bribery and more. Though I knew a number of contestants, my favorite remains Miss Beasley, and how she answered the question about how many licks it takes to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop.
- The beard competition, which was not limited to those only with actual facial hair (pink fur, for instance, makes a nice beard, as do ferns...). I was most impressed with the mustache-category contestants, one of whom waxed his straight out at least half a foot. Oh, and the winner of the main competition was the one I bribed judges with strawberry liqueur for, too.
- Fire spinners, fire breathers, aerialists, and acro performers.
- Working a Greeter shift with a friend, getting to catch up, and even getting to greet some people, though it was already Sunday afternoon.
- Drives easier for having a congenial passenger to while away the time with.
- Hugs!
- Banana shark cake (which apparently had too much frosting, but was still quite impressive).
- The magic of a woods transformed at night.
- There was an extra day this year, which had pluses and minuses. There was a longer time for people to arrive as well as depart, since the bug wasn't on the last night, but there was a bit of a let-down Sunday. Some of that might have been my undersleptness, but I think having some other large-ish event to start the evening off might have helped.
- The mellowness of no schedule, with lots of social possibilities.
- Only a couple of bug bites despite not using bug spray except on the door of the tent.
- Being called by my college name.
