Halloween Night
Nov. 1st, 2002 10:49 am... an older Knight Templar smoking on some front porch as I went to get groceries...
After the foodly errands, I finally went shopping for something to wear to the wedding Sunday. Black-tie optional event, in the afternoon, and since it's a wedding, I'll dance a fair bit and get sweaty, so no heavy things, and hopefully something washable. Through Porter and down Mass Ave to check out the shops. Frustrating to find nothing interesting. Still, it wasn't quite as painful as I'd expected (haven't gone clothes shopping since last year), though I now know that I'm currently unlikely to fit things marked "Large." Ah, well. Finally found a top to go with the floor-length black skirt. Hope it works...
I walked over to potluck, on the early side, and noticed a small tiger cub and a tinier angel on the way. Closer to potluck, there were roving gangs of teens... I was lucky enough to have an egg land at my feet (not on me), and I had walked away before any shaving cream came my way...
No one had mentioned a bread-and-cheese theme for potluck (at least 11 cheeses!), so my carrots, hummus, and pomegranate worked out ok. I wasn't dressed up, but a decent number of people were, plus the lights and effects were still up from the party. Low-key potluck. Got to see J-the-bike in an almost all fleece outfit, including a skirt and a red fringe on the top of his hat that definitely made me think of Marvin the Martian. Cthulhia faked people out who were hoping for a reprise of the Saturday night costume...
Other highlights: Andy's three carved pumpkins out front, Cthulhia taking me to heaven, lounging on clouds, seeing photos from the parties Saturday night, the surprise of Jmac's presence at potluck, Queue showing me his photos of the day.
I hadn't worried about Halloween night before, but there were still gangs of roving teens when I left, though there had been cops out. It felt just a bit scary, which is unusual for me. Growing up, the worse that happened was some shaving cream, or smashed pumpkins. I don't know whether it is worse now, or I notice it more, or what, but it made me glad I live somewhere that's unlikely to be targeted. (Hm, I suppose the egregious traffic yesterday afternoon was people trying to get home in time for the trick-or-treaters.)
I agree with Cellio, though: Purim is a much better paradigm than Halloween. I like the dressing up opportunities of having both, however.
