What if there were two sets of images, one on each side of the pieces, so you could match them based on the image on one side or the other.
Or, if each piece had two images, but there weren't distinct sets of images ("front" and "back," whatever). You might be able to make a match with just one flip of a piece, though perhaps the rule would be that each turn involved flipping two pieces.
