Random thought from Shabbat: smoke rating

I was sitting in my kitchen, yet again smelling my neighbors' grilling something-or-other (that's why I seem to always be wanting hamburgers in the summer...), and realized that some smoke is much nicer than other kinds.

So, from best to worst smelling smoke:

grilling meat
grilling vegetables
pipe smoke
burning wood (as long as it's not a building or anything....)
burning charcoal
cigarette smoke
cigar smoke

Those last two are definitely things to be avoided.

I don't think I've ever been around cigar smoke, but burning feathers and burning hair are pretty heinous, too - worse, I think, than cigarettes, anyway.

I haven't been around either of those (sounds like I'm glad about that!); cigar smoke has happily been a rare feature for me, most often something passed in the street. However, still incredibly nasty, even then.
