A Very Merry Unauthorized Children's Scientology Pageant (Kyle Jarrow, concept by Alex Timbers), to be precise, put on by Boston Theatre Works. The title describes it pretty well, actually. It's a musical (!) about L. Ron Hubbard and Scientology, all done by kids, with cardboard props carried in as necessary. And it was excellent, really funny, and surprisingly good quality (it's not easy to ensure that with a cast of eight kids, five girls, three boys). The story showed L. Ron Hubbard's birth, travels, questioning, war experiences, creating dianetics, indictment for fraud, and the inner secrets of Scientology (which I will not divulge, but will say it involves masks, reflective materials, and black-light reflective paint :-).

Of particular note: one boy who looked just like Ron Weasley (which was disconcerting when he had a scene with the boy playing L. Ron); another boy who managed to continue despite being ill; the tiny girl who put on sunglasses and became Tom Cruise; the ongoing question of what the L stands for; and the white-stickered-over picture of the actual L. Ron Hubbard in the program (apparently his image is trademarked).

It's a short show, only an hour, and well worth seeing. It runs through Saturday night in the Black Box Theater at the Boston Center for the Arts.

Small box, some fruit.

  • an eggplant
  • a head of cauliflower
  • two bags of green beans (a pound and a half?)
  • a huge head of garlic
  • six sweet potatoes of various sizes
  • four white potatoes
  • four yellow onions
  • seven small Gala apples
  • two Anjou pears
  • three lemons (yay!)
  • two navel oranges
  • two satsuma tangerines

First thoughts: definitely green beans for Shabbat dinner. I still have the eggplant from last week, so I should make eggplant, but at least a couple of people coming aren't eggplant people, so making something else is more appealing. It's the first night of Hanukah, which would imply something fried, but since I can't serve it immediately after frying, that's less than ideal. I could go with Mom's idea of potato kugel instead of latkes (to be lower in fat), perhaps with a bit of sweet potato and/or apple in it for variety. I had thought (before this delivery) of mixed mashed white root veggies (potatoes, turnips, and sunchokes), but I can still mash the other two together. Or stick with that, and nix the kugel, which is more nervous-making for me, given that I rarely kugelize. Also, I think I should put apples and pear on the don't-send list, given that I'm inundated with hand fruit (plus I'd've liked the other fruits I didn't get more than these just now.)

I just broke one of Nanny's crystal glasses, in one of those slow-motion shouldn't-I-be-able-to-stop-this moments.
