Scientology pageant
Dec. 13th, 2006 10:36 amA Very Merry Unauthorized Children's Scientology Pageant (Kyle Jarrow, concept by Alex Timbers), to be precise, put on by Boston Theatre Works. The title describes it pretty well, actually. It's a musical (!) about L. Ron Hubbard and Scientology, all done by kids, with cardboard props carried in as necessary. And it was excellent, really funny, and surprisingly good quality (it's not easy to ensure that with a cast of eight kids, five girls, three boys). The story showed L. Ron Hubbard's birth, travels, questioning, war experiences, creating dianetics, indictment for fraud, and the inner secrets of Scientology (which I will not divulge, but will say it involves masks, reflective materials, and black-light reflective paint :-).
Of particular note: one boy who looked just like Ron Weasley (which was disconcerting when he had a scene with the boy playing L. Ron); another boy who managed to continue despite being ill; the tiny girl who put on sunglasses and became Tom Cruise; the ongoing question of what the L stands for; and the white-stickered-over picture of the actual L. Ron Hubbard in the program (apparently his image is trademarked).
It's a short show, only an hour, and well worth seeing. It runs through Saturday night in the Black Box Theater at the Boston Center for the Arts.
The program included some notes about the next play in the BTW lineup, A Midsummer Night's Dream. They're going to use only eight actors, so lots of doubling, and the choices are interesting. Bottom and Puck will be solo roles. The rest will be paired, with much gender play, most notably Oberon/Hippolyta and Titania/Theseus. I'm looking forward to it. (ASP people: Paula Plum will be Oberon/Hippolyta.)

Date: 2006-12-14 03:10 am (UTC)I would imagine, though, that Harvard would have a good theater. And probably BU. Don't know about Brandeis, though. ;)
I'll be up in February! :)
