Happy Birthday, MissDimple!
(According to the Google logo, it's also Hitchcock's birthday :-)

The fifth Roxbury Film Festival starts tomorrow, running through Sunday. I hadn't realized there was a film festival in Boston dedicated to work by minority filmmakers.

Also upcoming next month, September 20 (on Shabbat. feh), is the garlic and arts festival, in Orange (northwestern MA, off Rte 2).

I saw a paper sign advertising tax preparation in a storefront window painted to advertise the taxi service within. I so wanted there to be a sign "Taxis and Taxes".

In the downpour last night I saw a man dressed only in some long shorts dash barefoot through the rain, holding an umbrella up to cover him as he sprinted. His movement, showing his muscles, while holding the umbrella aloft, was beautiful. When he got to the parking garage, a woman (his girlfriend? wife? sister?) gave him shoes and a sweatshirt. I'd walked by her before, holding the pair of shoes, and had wondered why she was holding them.

There were supposed to be meteors last night, so of course it was a cloudy night around here. Though that's not a surprise, given the weather of late. Sudden torrential downpour? Light showers? A drenching rain? It seems we've gotten all kinds of rain there is in these last weeks. It makes me think of Dublin, where one Sunday there were seven different rain events. I think we've come close some days. I wonder if there's a Douglas Adamsian rain god visiting the area for the summer...

Passionada

Last night I went to a free screening of Passionada, a new movie filmed in New Bedford, which will hit theaters this weekend in full release. It was at the Kendall, and it was mostly full, but not completely. I sat and crocheted for a while, until the conversation behind me turned to math problems, and I just couldn't help but point out there was an easier way to solve the question than the two approaches already mentioned.

Instead of previews, there was a woman with announcements, talking about how to get parking validated, and requesting that everyone there tell all their friends about the movie, lest it get swept out of theaters after the first weekend. After much reiteration, plus mention of fado music being locally available, the movie finally started.

possible spoilers, but mostly not )

There were freebies when we left: a card with a recipe on it (paella, not so useful for me, and I found a typo in the first moments of looking at it. I think even the nonkosher people I know would refuse to use prok in their food...), lemon-lime Kashi bars, copies of Weight Watcher magazine. I'd walked, and preferred to have my hands free, so didn't take the latter two.
