Jun. 27th, 2003 09:20 amThere are some scary products available these days. Last night at Michael's I saw a wide range of teddy bear outfits, including a range of decorated sweaters, sweatsuits, and overalls. And this morning at the Butcherie, I saw boxed frozen sushi. Ugh!
This morning is the first day the national registry for blocking phone spam is available (phone registration isn't for a little while yet). It seems pretty simple, putting in up to three phone numbers, and an email address. They'll send an email with a link to verify that this number should be blocked, and that's that. Of course, there's nothing to keep me from putting my friends' phone numbers in there, but I don't think anyone would particularly mind being saved from annoying calls.
The MBTA is planning a new apartment complex at Porter Square, above the rail line. They're also planning a bunch of other developments in similar sorts of 'air spaces' above other rail lines. It's an interesting solution to getting more well-located (for public transportation) housing. It's going to be interesting to see how it works out (I wonder how bad the traffic will be around Porter during construction...)
I just got information on next year's plays at Brandeis. I'm not quite as thrilled as I could be: they're doing The Cherry Orchard again. There was a production of it only a couple of years ago, and it was horrible. I admit to not having any appreciation for Chekhov's plays, though. Still, they've cut back to a six-play season (from eight), and there are a lot of plays out there...
The rest of the line-up looks reasonable, though: Don Quixote, Shakespeare's The Winter's Tale, Blue Window, Twilight: Los Angeles, and, as every year, a new play by someone in the playwrighting program (these have been pretty good, all the years I've gone).
I get a subscription for the preview night, Tuesday, partly because Tuesday is convenient for me (though I can change the night for a given play if I need to), and partly because it's cheaper ($70). If anyone is interested in joining me, let me know.
I got to use the new lantern I got at Pier1 last week. The reddish glow and patterns of light are really pretty, but it doesn't give as much light (from a tea light) as the glass-sided ones from Ikea; I'm glad I have both. It made me want to do more porch-transforming, though. And I'm glad I finally figured out that I could put the fan in the window, so we could both sit outside (cooler in dusk) and get a guaranteed breeze :-). Must do that again.
