phantom limbs
Mar. 17th, 2002 12:10 pmi was lying in bed last night, trying to sleep. kept on trying to find a more comfortable position to keep the ENORMOUS CAST over my hand elevated while still managing to sleep, and hopefully not wake up with oddly sore muscles.
(this is the biggest cast/ splint yet (#3), pretty impossible to wear anything with longish sleeves; i'm so glad i'm to get a different one weds, and regain use of at least 2 uninjured fingers. at least they gave me a sling- it's heavy to keep elevated all the time. (and more prone to pain :-( ))
and at times i could've sworn my fingers were in different positions, which i know is currently impossible (my dad's description of how feet should feel in downhill ski boots seems apt: "comfortably encased in cement."). it wasn't just one time either, and i started to feel i could more clearly understand how amputees feel with phantom limbs (luckily mine had to do with position only, not pain or itching). definitely weird.
still on the finger front: surgery friday to have 2 pins put in. i found that local anesthesia is not very effective on me. and i got weirded out when i realized that the pins (under all the wrapping; i haven't seen this) stick out some, so they'll be easily taken out in the doctor's office in a few weeks. tigerbright called me "voodoo magid" when she heard, and another friend said "frankenmagid". it is a really creepy thing. [quick frisson of horror]
still getting tired very early; i'm glad the rescheduled outing to see macbeth ended up being a matinee...
