(how could i go for a week without a food entry? hard to imagine...)
my friend's husband was away most of the time i was there (he's also my friend, but not quite as close). he was concerned that his wife not eat junk, so made lots of things before he left, including a wonderful shitake mushroom soup, a morrocan winter squash/spinach/chickpea dish, and a mexican seitan thing (all vegan; he's currently into cookbooks by lorna sass). all quite yummy.
in addition, we went out to a japanese restaurant, had some excellent sushi, also fried tofu, miso, veggie tempura. no, it wasn't a kosher restaurant. my friend had previously interviewed the chef (through an interpreter) about how things are done in his kitchen, and there were many things kept separate. and i seem to be changing how strict i am about some kosher things.... (but that's another post).
