Farm share, week 1, also mushrooms
Jun. 18th, 2019 09:55 pmThis year I decided not to renew with Red Fire Farm, after last year's bulk order 6-month fiasco. I chose to go with Next Barn Over Farm, based in Hadley, with a regular-sized boxed share that I pick up at the Harvard Square Clover on Tuesdays. Today was the first pickup.
I also got a mushroom share through Rhode Island Mushroom Company, which is also a Tuesday pickup at the same Clover. It's a brown bag with mushrooms each week, and definitely a bit more than last year's share. This week was the third pickup
Week 1: maitake
Week 2: shiitake
Week 3: blue oyster mushroom
First thoughts: turnip and radish greens sauteed with some garlic, basil, and mushrooms, likely also eggs. Lots of green salad. Fridge pickles for the radishes, possibly also turnips. A stir-fry with the bok choy, miso, tofu, garlic, ginger, etc. Possibly a soup with the kale and some leftover sweet potato.
- a large bunch of smallish Hakurei turnips with greens
- a medium bunch of red radishes with greens
- seven baby bok choy (the all-light-green kind)
- a medium bunch of green garlic (six, with young garlic bulbs, and some with scapes on top)
- four small summer squash
- two enormous heads of green leaf lettuce
- a bunch of basil
- a huge bunch of mostly-green red Russian kale (based on the purple stems)

Date: 2019-06-19 03:38 pm (UTC)My gardens are growing nicely - I have kale ready to pick, my zucchini plants look very promising, spinach is coming along, and I have some carrots that might do well, who knows, I'll leave them alone for a few months. Alas, I think the beets are not doing great, but again, leave them alone for a few months and we'll see. Also green beans! and first time growing cucumbers!
