Anecdata

I've been noticing that in the last year or so, there seem to be fewer cars parked in my neighborhood. I guess I'm not the only one to become carless (reframe: carfree!*). Tonight, Cambridge announced a snow emergency as of 8 P.M.. I just looked out my living room window, and despite the parking ban on my street, I can see at least five parking spots available on the side street nearest me. Sure, some people could be parking in the garages that are free, but so many as to clear the main street and leave so many spots even so?

Poking around the city website didn't net me any numbers for cars registered, but I did find out that the city is definitely interested in encouraging non-car travel, especially bikes, having updated the requirements for bike parking with new construction, and on Ames St., part of redoing the street included changing the bike lane, so parked cars are to the left of bikes, buffering the bike lane. If people aren't carpooling, it makes things easier; I just hope that there won't be any inadvertent doorings due to passengers not paying attention.

Hm. I seem to have meandered away from the original point. In any case, given the storm, I hope everyone nearby is staying warm, and not driving more than absolutely necessary.
* Oh, and if I insert an e, those become careless or carefree, which are rather more different. Oh, English.
