magidMy mom went back to work full time when I was in junior high (there was no 'middle school' then). She worked at the Paul Revere Insurance Company (with actual Paul Revere-made items on display in the corporate area), which was an employer that tried to take care of its employees with lots of little nice perks, like a twice-daily coffee cart coming through the offices, and a subsidized cafeteria, and a small lending library. If I visited my mom at work more than briefly, I often ended up down there. I could take books out using my mom's name in the log-out book (based on trust; I don't know who set up the library, or who maintained it). It was a lovely, quiet place to read, though the selection wasn't large. Still, that was where I first found a few Bernie Rhodenbarr books by Lawrence Block, which I enjoyed a lot.
Much later, the company took the library out, putting a gym in somewhere else instead. And then the whole company was bought out by another insurance company. So it's a long-lost library of fond memory. I rather wish there were more companies these days who provided such perks their employees appreciated.
