[100 things] 2. Library: Worcester
Apr. 28th, 2012 10:58 pmThe other main public library I used when I was a kid is the Worcester Public Library. It was far enough away that I couldn't get there without a ride downtown (I didn't get my driver's license until spring of my senior year in high school, and while it was theoretically possible to walk to the edge of Worcester and catch an infrequent bus downtown from there, I think I might have taken that bus only once or twice). It was a larger library than Paxton's, with that many more books to choose from (I don't know whether I was really aware of interlibrary loan at that point, though without computers, it's not so easy to determine what's available where; I'm sure I didn't know about regional library networks).
Not only were there more books to choose from, but their library book sales had more books too, and the price was right; I got to indulge my want to own books sometimes for a dollar a bag, by the end of the sale. Total excitement, never knowing when I'd find a jewel.
Architecturally, I didn't particularly like the space, making me think of modern cement buildings with lines of windows, not my taste at all (the new part of the BPL in Copley reminds me of it, though with fewer open spaces (horizontal or vertical).
