Last night I finally made it to Liars and Believers/Jason Slavick's new show, based on Song of Songs (well, Shir haShirim, given that there was Hebrew included in parts of the show). I wasn't sure what to expect, especially since Jason's work in theater is plot-based, and the source text is evocative love poetry, not a story per se.

When the house opened, there was music by a duo from The Doctors Fox, voice and two guitars (though one sometimes played a tinier electric guitar that sounded closer to a uke), which was nice. It felt social, as people came in to the open seating show, saying hi to friends in the audience. There were a lot of friends in the audience; the light murmur made me think of a cabaret of some sort.

The main show was a series of musical pieces. The frame story was a teen-aged girl sent a record (yes, vinyl :-) by a guy who likes her, to get her attention. The rest of the the show was the songs on the record, music by a five-piece band (standard instruments, mostly, though there was one song that included a typewriter), songs by the five-person cast (though mostly not the girl listening to the record; she stayed in that character while the others flowed through a couple of different characters), with dancing, and a few puppets too. There were a couple of different pairs of lovers shown in the subplots, not all of them heterosexual.

I had a good time, though I rather wished I'd gone with someone; the show was definitely about being paired.

I'm curious to see what the next show will be like; all I know about it is that it's a collaboration with Walter Sickert and the Army of Broken Toys.
