I got out for a bike ride this afternoon. I didn't have particular time constraints, and knew I'd want to push it. Of note: I haven't biked more than 20 miles or so at a stretch since last fall. I pushed, and pushed, and as usual, realized rather too late that I was pretty tired; coming home was challenging, even going fairly slowly, just because I was exhausted. Also not good: completely out of calories. I'd only brought two vegan jerkies, which was not enough.

The route took me on new roads (my usual goal, other than some idea of distance), and went through: Cambridge, Arlington, Lexington, Bedford, Acton, Maynard, Concord again, Lincoln, Weston, Waltham, Watertown, and back to Cambridge. According to gmaps pedometer, the route was 46.5 miles. Too much; I'm going to be paying tomorrow. And I'm exhausted, and feeling certain muscles too much.

Part of me is pleased I could manage this (basically) cold, and part of me is annoyed that I haven't kept up last year's level of fitness, when this would have been a ride that wouldn't have flattened me, better.

that's really awesome, but too bad you ran out of calories and made yourself sore! Some alcohol and preemptive NSAIDs can help minimize delayed soreness.

I've stretched some, and plan to stretch a bit more before showering. Alcohol sounds nice :-).

I'm usually too... (not sure what the right adjective is here; disinclined to take pills even when having headaches, muscle aches, etc. (Puritan, maybe?), so even less likely to take them preemptively. But having your suggestion makes it more likely.)

Still, great that you pushed on through. Gratz on working so hard!

Thanks!

Amazingly, today I feel fine, if tired (not enough contiguous sleep, unfortunately). I'm debating going out for a ride after it cools off some, though I suspect I'll be saddle sore.
