I'm hosting both dinners. The first one includes some vegan guests. The heat wave has wreaked havoc with my original plans... I hope things come out ok (especially considering my lack of air conditioning, also cross ventilation doesn't work so much, unfortunately).

First night
  • challah, wine/grape juice
  • hummus, olives
  • chilled honeydew with lime and freshly cracked black pepper
  • sprouted wheat pappardelle with spicy nut sauce
  • home made baked beans (from Shabbat)
  • green salad with pineapple, jicama, scallions, and tomato
  • minty lemon-lime-ade
  • pastries from Israel, halva, Medjool dates, cherries, nuts, sorbet

Second night
  • challah, wine/grape juice
  • cold potato-leek soup
  • hummus, olives
  • sliced sweet potatoes
  • Israeli salad
  • watermelon-feta-mint salad with scallions
  • [either a tofu- or an egg-based dish]
  • cheesecake (via HH)
  • halva, Medjool dates, cherries, nuts, sorbet

And, wholly off topic, I've paid June's stupid tax: I managed to lose my bank card my last day out of the country. *sigh*

No vegans first night after all; one vegan second night.

Didn't end up serving olives, nuts, or sorbet the first night.

Second night included a spicy tofu sautee with onions, cabbage, and carrot, also a wholly local rhubarb compote (with local honey as sweetener).

Ooh, sounds like it all turned out more than okay, with refreshing foods appropriate for the heat and a showcase of nice fruits for Shavuot.

You brought back pastries?

Sorry about the stupid tax; hope it is easily remedied.

I was pretty pleased with how the food came out, though I think I needed more feta to balance the watermelon.

There were boxes of Middle Eastern pastries in the Ben Gurion duty free shops, with baklava and other shredded wheat + nuts + sugar syrup sorts of things.

I've been to the bank, and sometime in the next two weeks I should be getting a new one. Until then, I'm all retro with money, having to go to a brick-and-mortar bank during business hours to get cash rather than using the almighty plastic everywhere. It's a flash back to the 70s...

More feta is always good.

Ooh, yummy, and cool that they were obtainable there.

I like using cash.
