S is for...
Nov. 7th, 2006 02:45 pmSnark: South Carolina's governor Sanford burned his eyes the day before election under too-bright lights... at the opening of new headquarters for Inspiration Networks, an xtian TV network. (Do you SEE the light?)
Silly: There are some bizarre patents issued in the U.S.
Skipping school: As of September, it's now legal in MA for 16- and 17-year-olds to be poll workers, so at least one civics teacher suggested his students work the polls instead of coming to school. I think it's a great way to get kids involved in local politics (something my long-ago civics class sorely lacked).
Steel: Thorne designs mostly steel houses, which means that they can be cantilevered over steep slopes, and keep more of the site as it was before building. I was impressed to read how he investigated how the light would fall at different times of day and year.
Sad: Ernestine Gilbreth Carey (co-author of Cheaper by the Dozen, among other books, and the last surviving of her siblings) died November 4, age 98.
