I'm going to visit Portland next month. I know I have to go to Powell's and the Japanese garden. I may possibly go to the Oregon Jewish Museum or take a walking tour.

Any other recommendations for things to see or do?

I liked the Japanese garden, but it is not huge so only a part of a day activity. I did enjoy having tea in the tea house there.

I went to see the Columbia River Gorge and did a driving tour of that, but there is also lots of hiking so you could plan a day there. Beautiful waterfalls.

I would love to go back and visit my Aunt and see more again there, my day and a half to play on the business trip was not enough

I checked the Japanese garden schedule, and was bummed to see that there's going to be bonsai activities only earlier in the month. I've heard amazing things about the garden, though, so I'm looking forward to it.

How far is the gorge outside the city? I'll be staying with people, so I'm not sure whether I'll have car access or when they'd be available for hiking.

(And there's never enough time on business trips to get all the interesting/social things done.)

You need a car to get there, about 14 to 16 miles and then you follow the old highway.

How long are you going to be there? When are you going?

I'll be there for a week, leaving on Turkey Day, coming back the following Thursday.

If I get myself biking a bunch in the next month, that sounds like it might be a cool bike route.

places to see

The Chinese gardens are near powells and strictly vegetarian (maybe Vegan) Chinese restaurant.

The Japanese garden are near the Shakespeare gardens (every plant mentioned in Shakespeare or something).

You can have access to a car and maybe the people that you will be staying with will do some of the sightseeing with you:-).

The Gorge is a must see. Mt. St. Helens can be fun but 2 hours. Mt. Hood is only 1 hour. The Beach is cold.... but nice in the winter.

The Rimsky-Korsakoffee House is way cool and an easy bus ride and someone here really wants to go.

And there is the www.sprucegoose.org/ if you like cool aircraft (a b 52 boomer and other stuff)
:-)

What do you like to do?

Oooh, a Shakespeare garden! I knew that there's one in Central Park, but I didn't know there's one in Portland.

I was hoping the hosts would like to do some sightseeing, but I didn't want to assume their schedules would be free... :-)

Gorges and mountains and beaches and hiking are all very good things.

I'm a little less interested in coffee (being one of the few who don't imbibe), but if there's nice tea, I'm happy to explore coffeehouses*.

Aircraftare much lower down on the list for me.

Forgot the footnote.

* I love that coffeehouses have become such a phenomena. It feels so historic, European in the 17th and 18th centuries.

The Chinese garden is nice too, though not as big as the Japanese one. The Rose garden was interesting to me but maybe not to everyone, and it's not as easy to get to.

I hadn't heard about the Chinese one. Is it near the Japanese one?

I liked the Berkeley rose garden; another rose garden would be quite welcome, though perhaps late November is not a good time to view one, even in the Pacific NW?

The Chinese garden is in Chinatown and takes up a city block. Very trimet-accessible.

Not sure when good rose-viewing times are - it was already a little bedraggled in October.

Noted. Is there anywhere in particular you'd recommend, or 'just' the Pacific in general? (Any idea how long a drive it is?)

If you go to Powell's, you may find you no longer have the time or will for anything else :)

I did worry about that.... Perhaps I'll go the last day I'm there :-).

And leave your wallet behind ;) (Unless you don't mind leaving it in Powell's when you leave.)

I can tell myself I have to carry everything I buy (not to mention fit it in the suitcase)...

(Practically, new books could be found locally, as long as I remember which they are, so it's the glories found in the used book section that will be the most difficult to resist. (Or, well, not :-).)
