I'm glad that xeriscaping is hip in the dryness that is Los Alamos; it gives me hope. (Well, except for the Republicans, but they haven't been giving me any hope for a long while now.)
It's from the Greek, hence the x-ness rather than zedification. And to give garden alphabet books a useful x word, of course :-)
Thankfully, it's been raining a bit there lately. Supposedly, we are getting less than average, but it's been pretty green when I've been there lately. And it rained all Columbus Day weekend!
That's funny that you posted this. I was actually discussing xeriscaping with one of the realtors in my real estate office. He was telling me a story about how some other agent tried to make him feel all stupid when he first got his licence by discussing 'xeriscaping' with one of his customers, right in front of him. The other agent was all like, 'What, Sean, you don't know what xeriscaping is???
I'd never seen the word before (and in a picture book!), despite knowing the idea. I'm glad it exists: much easier to discuss once there's a word for it.
Wait, Florida needs xeriscaping? I think of it being rather lush. OK, sure, I haven't seen most of the state, but still.
