Date: 2006-05-15 01:33 pm (UTC)ESSEX COUNTY MA AND THE MERRIMACK RIVER IN HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY NH
AND MIDDLESEX COUNTY MA ARE THE PRIMARY MAJOR FLOOD REGIONS IN OUR
AREA...HAVING SHIFTED FROM WESTERN HARTFORD COUNTY CT LAST FRIDAY.
ALREADY WIDESPREAD RAINFALL REPORTS OF 4-11 INCHES ACROSS EASTERN MA
AND SOUTHWEST NH. WIDESPREAD 60 HR STORM TOTALS OF 6-12 INCHES
EXPECTED...WITH ISOLATED 15 INCHES AMOUNTS ON THE NORTH SHORE WHEN
ALL IS SAID AND DONE.
KBOX STP HAS AN OVERALL ACCURATE ASSESSMENT OF MAX RAINFALL LOCATION
AND THE GRADIENTS. WE STILL THINK THE RADAR IS UNDERESTIMATING
SLIGHTLY...BUT ITS WORTH LOOKING AT ITS ONE HOUR PCPN ESTIMATES.
MANY RIVERS IN FLOOD...SOME OF IT MAJOR OR APPROACHING A FLOOD OF
RECORD. PLEASE SEE THE LATEST FLOOD STATEMENTS /BOSFLSBOX/ AND FLOOD
WARNINGS /BOSFLWBOX/ FOR DETAILS.
&&
.CLIMATE...
BOSTON HAD RECORD DAILY RAINFALL OF 3.77 INCHES...WHICH BREAKS THE
MAY 14 CALENDAR DAY RECORD OF 1 INCH FROM 1882.
THROUGH 1 AM...THE MONTH TO DATE PRECIPITATION IN BOSTON IS 10.75
INCHES...WHICH MAKES IT THE 2ND WETTEST MAY ON RECORD. HERE ARE THE
TOP 3 WETTEST MAYS ON RECORD FOR BOSTON.
1. 13.38 INCHES IN 1954
2. 10.75 INCHES IN 2006
3. 8.77 INCHES IN 1984
THROUGH 1 AM...THE MONTH TO DAY PRECIPITATION IN PROVIDENCE IS 5.84
INCHES...WHICH IS 8TH WETTEST MAY IN 100 YEARS OF RECORD KEEPING. IT
WILL NOT TAKE MUCH OVER THE NEXT TWO DAYS TO JUMP TO 5TH WETTEST
MAY...WHICH IS CURRENTLY 6.07 INCHES IN 1989.
WE HAVE CHECKED THE ALL TIME MAY TOTALS IN SOUTHERN NEW ENGLAND
/MULTIPLE OFFICES SERVING/ FROM COOPERATIVE OBSERVERS AND STANDARD
LONG TERM NWS LOCATIONS...AND STEVENSON DAM IN CT HAS THE LARGEST
KNOWN MONTHLY TOTAL FOR MAY WITH 15.30 INCHES IN 1989. PERU MA
RECORDED 13.60 INCHES IN MAY 1984...FOLLOWED BY BOSTON MA WITH 13.38
INCHES IN MAY 1954.
AS OF 2 PM SUNDAY...IPSWICH MA HAD UNOFFICIALLY RECEIVED 14.54 INCHES
OVER THE FIRST 14 DAYS OF THIS MONTH. WHAT THIS MEANS IS THIS CURRENT
EVENT HAS PROPELLED PORTIONS OF NORTHEAST MASSACHUSETTS TOWARD ALL
TIME MAY RECORDS. WAKEFIELD MA UNOFFICIALLY HAD RECORDED OVER A FOOT
OF RAINFALL THIS MONTH.
REGARDING THE BOSTON MEDIA REQUEST FOR 2 AND 3 DAY RECORD RAINFALLS
FOR BOSTON. CONSIDER THIS CORRECTED AND EXPANDED SET OF DATA PROBABLY
COMPLETE...HAVING BEEN SURVEYED AND CONFIRMED VIA TWO INTERNAL SOURCES
AND THREE EXTERNAL SOURCES. THANK YOU TO ALL ANONYMOUS CONTRIBUTORS
BOTH FOR INQUIRY AND RESOLUTION.
BOSTON TWO CONSECUTIVE DAY /48 HR/ RECORD RAINFALL
08/18-19/1955 11.94
10/20-21/1996 7.89
05/13-14/2006 7.61
06/13-14/1998 6.86
BOSTON THREE CONSECUTIVE DAY /72 HR/ RECORD RAINFALL

05/12-14/2006 7.98
09/15-17/1933 7.87
06/13-15/1998 7.85
ALSO FOR WHAT THIS IS WORTH...BOSTON HAS HAD 3 SUCCESSIVE DAYS OF
DAILY RECORD RAINFALL...JULY 2-4 2002...BUT THE DAILY PRECIPITATION
AMOUNTS WERE RELATIVELY MODEST. AS OF TODAY...BOSTON HAS TWO
CONSECUTIVE DAYS OF RECORD DAILY RAINFALL.
OCTOBER 2005 IN BOSTON AREA AND NORTH SHORE WAS NOT AS SERIOUS WHEN
COMPARED TO THE FIRST 14 DAYS OF MAY 2006! ALREADY MAY 2006 SURPASSES
OCT 2005 AT LOGAN AIRPORT BY ALMOST AN INCH. EVEN THE GREAT BLUE HILL...
WITH ITS 14.32 INCHES IN OCT 2005...HAS HAD ITS AMOUNT SURPASSED UP IN
IPSWICH MA THIS MONTH. OCT 2005 PRODUCED MANY RAINFALL TOTALS OF OF 15
TO 17 INCHES ACROSS NORTHERN CT...THE WESTERN HALF OF MA...AND UP
INTO CHESHIRE COUNTY OF SOUTHWEST NH.
Re: NWS says (long):
Date: 2006-05-15 01:44 pm (UTC)Last night I was reading the flood warnings, which were all permutations of "river at X feet, flood stage at X+2 feet, expected height in 12 hours X+3 feet, [list of areas that would be effected]". Scary stuff.
I'd like the happy medium for weather, thank you. She can come back from whatever road tour she's gone on.

Thank god for dry socks!

Date: 2006-05-15 02:20 pm (UTC)And totally about the dry socks. I've been carrying an extra pair (plus I keep a pair at work). If it weren't for my toe being sore still, I'd be considering sandals, despite the chill: no squelchy socks to deal with!
