Well, not really, since it's all on my porch, not in a garden, but 'porching' is definitely right out.
So. Two Sundays ago I decided it was spring enough and I was going to do something with plants. I didn't feel like shopping, but I had some packets of flower seeds I'd gotten last year and never ended up using. I planted marigolds (edible and they keep certain bugs away), poppies, columbines (the picture on the packet is pretty; it's sad that the name has such other associations now), and some mixed wildflowers that had come as a promotion for some TV series or movie or something. Inspired by the story of 2000-year-old date pits sprouting, I planted some of the pits from the medjool dates, just out of curiousity.
As of this morning, there are some little plants starting with their first two leaves. Flowers only, not the dates; I assume they'll take longer to germinate, but they might also have drowned in last week's rain. I'll give it a few more weeks.
Overwintered in the kitchen and put out a couple of weeks ago: two kinds of lavender and oregano. The rosemary made it almost through the winter, then died all at once (anyone need some rosemary twigs for grilling over?). Also, the chives have come up and are flowering.
Last night I bought a heavy-duty bracket to put up, with the plan that I'll try for upside-down tomatoes this year, with basil at the top.
I've got a large sage plant coming, traded for helping in a friend's community garden plot Sunday morning.
My porch looks disjointed now (rather like this post), with all the bits and pieces I shoved into corners at the end of last fall.
The plan:

The plan:
- transplant the flowers when they're big enough (in a couple of weeks)
- get planters for the railings to put them in (consider ordering self-watering pots)
- figure out which annuals I want to grow, likely basil, nasturtiums, lettuces of some sort, and mint (I know, not an annual, but I don't have any), and whatever else appeals when I go plant shopping (I go mostly for leaves and flowers for the more immediate gratification, especially since I can't grown enough of $VEGETABLE to be enough). Reminder to self: lettuces will need to be in whatever shady places I can make; plan accordingly.
- get new rosemary, consider some thymes
- get more organic potting soil and compost if necessary
- replant the ginger, harvesting some
- consider a hanging basket or two of just (= inedible) flowers
- once everything's planted, rearrange as necessary to have a pleasant sitting space
- porch dinners

Date: 2006-05-09 09:12 pm (UTC)I been thinking of trying the upside down tomatoes too! We have some hooks left by the original owner, and they seem pretty heavy duty to me. I'm also planning on going porch-gardening shopping sometime soon.
My lab manager gave me some cana bulbs, for greenery, and will bring geranium cuttings, and one of my co-workers is rooting a fig tree for me. (grows well indoors during the winter, hope the cats don't eat it)
I need to get more pots and soil, hanging baskets, (For the geranium and I'd like to get some petunias too) and seeds and baby plants and stuff. Maybe we'll get a Zipcar for this weekend...

(Really, I'm glad we're getting the water we needed, but two rainy weeks in a row is a bit more than I want at once.)
